It’s official: Kirsten Dunst finally got exactly what she asked for!
Just months after expressing her interest in joining the massive gaming franchise, the 43-year-old actress hopped on Instagram to announce she has landed the role of Alex in the upcoming sequel to 'A Minecraft Movie.' On 19th March, she shared the news with fans, celebrating that her dream had finally come true.
Kirsten Dunst's New Role
While the character of Alex was briefly teased in a post-credits scene in the first film—originally voiced by Saturday Night Live star Kate McKinnon—Kirsten Dunst will be taking over the role for the live-action follow-up. She joins returning cast members Jason Momoa, Jack Black, and Danielle Brooks. The casting comes on the heels of the first film's massive success in April 2025, which raked in nearly $1 billion at the box office.

Kirsten Dunst previously joked with Town & Country that she had two totally relatable reasons for wanting in on the sequel: her kids are obsessed with the first movie, and she really just wanted to be part of a massive box-office hit!
She joked about wanting to make a movie that doesn't lose money for a change. Her most recent project, 'Roofman,' didn't have a blockbuster budget, as most of the production funds were spent building a detailed replica of a Toys "R" Us store. In fact, she noted that her kids still wear the pyjamas she took home from that set.
