'KPop Demon Hunters' Will Stay Animated, Creator Says Live-Action "Would Lose the Magic"

Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans, creators of the smash Netflix animated hit 'KPop Demon Hunters,' have publicly ruled out plans for a live‑action movie adaptation, arguing that the tone and fantasy elements would feel too "grounded" in a physical form.

After the global popularity of 'KPop Demon Hunters,' fans had begun to speculate that a live-action adaptation might be in the works. Maggie Kang, the co-creator, has now strongly dashed those aspirations in response, stating that the story's distinct fusion of action, fantasy, and K-pop flair will not translate well in the real world. The filmmakers are now concentrating on extending the universe through animation, maintaining loyal to what made the original film so exceptional, thanks to its record-breaking performance and devoted fan base.

Rise of 'KPop Demon Hunters'—A Global Hit

'KPop Demon Hunters' broke records as one of the most watched movies on Netflix when it debuted in June 2025 and swiftly became a cultural sensation. The film tells the tale of HUNTR/X, three K-pop idols (Zoey, Mira, and Rumi) who fight demons in secret while pursuing their musical careers.

They are in conflict with the Saja Boys, another demon boy band. Its soundtrack also caused a stir: the album had several songs in the top ten, and the single 'Golden' remained at the top of the Billboard Hot 100 for several weeks.

Over the course of a weekend, a sing-along movie made almost USD 18 million. The film's popularity went beyond streaming; its unique fusion of fantasy, music, emotional backstory, and eye-catching visuals resonated with viewers all across the world.

From Live Action Hopes to Firm Rejection

Naturally, there were rumours that 'KPop Demon Hunters' will be made into a live-action movie given its overwhelming popularity. According to early rumours, Sony and Netflix were even considering the prospect. However, Maggie Kang strongly disagreed with that approach in a recent BBC interview. "Many of the film's comic timing, exaggerated action, and surreal tone simply would not translate well to live actors," she stated. "It's really hard to imagine these characters in a live‑action world. It would feel too grounded," she added further.

Co director Chris Appelhans echoed her view, pointing out that animation gives them the freedom to combine traits—a character can go from goofy banter to gravity defying combat in an instant — something a live format would struggle to carry off naturally. Additionally, they warned that a lot of live anime and fantasy adaptations lose the flexibility and vitality that animation provides. The bottom line is that they would prefer not to adapt into live action if doing so would mean losing what made the original so great.

What's Next—Expansion in Animation?

Kang and Appelhans are still excited about growing the 'KPop Demon Hunters' universe, but only through animation, even though the live-action route is closed (for the time being). The backstories of Mira and Zoey, which were not able to be fully explored in the first film's running length, have already been alluded at in the sequels.

According to Maggie Kang, 'KPop Demon Hunters' was largely based on Rumi's story, but there is still a lot more to learn about that universe. Fans and producers anticipate more animated installments rather than a live version, even though nothing seems to have been officially approved yet. As Kang put it, they want whatever comes next to feel worthy of what the movie already achieved—and to preserve the imaginative spirit that made it special.
