Kristen Stewart is taking action to help keep the magic of going to the movies alive, using her passion for film to support and revive the theatre experience for future audiences.
The 35-year-old actor and director has revealed plans to restore the historic Highland Theatre in Los Angeles' Highland Park neighbourhood, bringing new life to a cinema that has been closed for nearly a year.
Kristen Stewart to Revive Broken Theatre
In a recent Architectural Digest feature published on 4th February, Kristen Stewart shared that she has always been drawn to ageing, forgotten theaters and the stories hidden inside them. That longtime fascination became personal when the Highland Theatre crossed her path.
The theatre officially closed on 29th February, 2024, just shy of its 100th anniversary. Built in the 1920s and designed by architect Lewis Arthur Smith, it first opened in March 1925 with a screening of 'Lady of the Night.'

Stewart explained that she didn't even realise she was searching for a theatre until this one appeared on her radar. Once it did, everything clicked, and she moved quickly and passionately to make it hers.
She sees the restoration as a chance to create a welcoming space where people can come together, exchange ideas, and celebrate film as a shared experience. Her goal is to make the theatre feel like a true community hub, not an exclusive space meant only for elite movie fans. For Kristen Stewart, the project is about pushing back against overly corporate entertainment and reconnecting cinema with creativity, culture, and human connection.
The building itself still holds many original details that Stewart hopes to carefully restore. She believes it's possible to honour the theatre's history while also giving it a fresh purpose—one that adds value to the neighbourhood and supports Los Angeles' wider film community.

Kristen Stewart is Building a Cinema Legacy
Kristen Stewart joins a growing group of filmmakers investing in L.A.'s cinema legacy. Quentin Tarantino owns both the New Beverly Cinema and the Vista Theatre, while filmmakers including Jason Reitman, Steven Spielberg, Christopher Nolan, and Bradley Cooper have helped revive the Fox Village Theatre in Westwood.
A proud Los Angeles native, Kristen Stewart has spoken openly about her love for the city. She appreciates its patchwork of neighbourhoods, its openness, and the freedom it gives people to create their own sense of belonging.
