Marvel Studios has officially confirmed that major characters like Iron Man and Captain America will be recast following the release of 'Avengers: Secret Wars' in 2027. The announcement was made by MCU President Kevin Feige during a press briefing held recently.

Feige explained that the events of 'Avengers: Secret Wars' will serve as a turning point for the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), allowing the studio to introduce fresh versions of beloved characters. Rather than a complete reboot, he described the transition as a narrative “reset” — a strategic move inspired by the multiverse reshuffling depicted in Marvel Comics’ 2015 'Secret Wars' storyline. That arc famously combined different timelines, altering character roles and relationships across the Marvel Universe.

Along with the recasting of Iron Man and Captain America, the next phase of the MCU will introduce a new lineup of X-Men. This next-gen mutant roster will make its debut in an upcoming X-Men film, directed by Jake Schreier.

While the future brings fresh faces, several veteran actors from previous X-Men films are set to return for 'Avengers: Doomsday', arriving in 2026. Among the returning cast are Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, James Marsden and others providing fans with a nostalgic send-off before the official reboot of the franchise.

What Would 'Avengers: Secret Wars' Offer?

Feige emphasised that 'Avengers: Secret Wars' will not only close out the post-Endgame saga but also set the stage for the next era of Marvel storytelling. He clarified that the term “reboot” doesn't quite fit Marvel’s approach, noting that “reset” is a more accurate description. The idea is to merge storylines into a single cohesive timeline — a method that allows for creative flexibility while honouring the legacy of the existing characters.

He also hinted that the recasting of iconic roles is a natural part of cinematic evolution. Drawing a parallel with other franchises, Feige mentioned the ongoing search for a new James Bond and the successful introduction of David Corenswet as Superman, emphasising that great characters can thrive with new actors when handled with care.

As for returning favourites, Feige suggested that fans may not have seen the last of Ryan Reynolds' Deadpool or Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine. He noted there's still plenty of potential left for both characters, hinting at future appearances without confirming specifics.

At this time, Marvel has not yet revealed who will step into the roles of Tony Stark or Steve Rogers, but casting announcements are expected shortly. As the studio continues shaping its multiverse saga, fans can look forward to bold new interpretations of the characters who helped define the MCU.
