Michael B. Jordan, acclaimed actor, producer, and now director, is once again shaking up Hollywood with a bold announcement: he's reimagining The 'Thomas Crown Affair,' a film that has captivated audiences for generations. Steve McQueen and Faye Dunaway starred in the 1968 release of the first version of 'The Thomas Crown Affair.' In the first version, Crown is a wealthy, bored businessman who, just for fun, plans a risky bank heist and gets caught up with an insurance investigator. The film stood out for its stylish portrayal of wealth, suspenseful heist mechanics, and pioneering split-screen cinematography that added a distinct visual flair.

Thirty years later, the narrative was repeated in 1999 with Pierce Brosnan and Rene Russo, moving the action to New York and substituting a high-stakes art theft from a museum for bank robbery. The story then focused on the sexual tension between the investigator and the burglar as well as the appeal of wealth and danger. That version fared well commercially, grossing about US $124 million worldwide on a modest budget, and became beloved for its sleek tone, seductive charm and elegance.

Why Jordan's Vision of 'Thomas Crown Affair' Feels Deeply "Personal"

Instead of calling his upcoming adaptation a remake, Michael B. Jordan refers to it as a "reimagination"—a retelling that retains the essential elements of the original story. "For me, the biggest thing was I didn't want it to be a reboot or a remake," Jordan said. "I really want to reimagine it. So it was a reimagination of what it is…what I liked about it was it didn't have too much baggage. It was just enough time and gap between generations." Jordan claims that when he first saw the 1999 movie as a teenager, it opened his eyes to a world of "art, slickness, wish fulfillment" that he had not often seen in his childhood, in addition to crime thrillers.

His mother, who has experience in working with paints, leather dyeing, and upholstery and has surrounded him with artists since an early age, is largely responsible for his emotional and visual sensibility. His goal to produce a version of 'The Thomas Crown Affair' that is not just entertaining but also has emotional resonance, realistic characters, and significant reasons is now shaped by that impact. Jordan now sees the story as an opportunity to examine identity, ambition, and the relationship between art and personal development rather than just a heist.

What's New for 2027: A Modern Re-imagining With Bigger Stakes

Rather than depicting 'Thomas Crown' as a wealthy thrill-seeker who steals simply out of boredom—a trademark of prior renditions—Jordan hopes to give Crown deeper motivations and larger stakes. Instead of the shiny escapism of previous editions, his version of Crown is anticipated to be more modern, emotionally nuanced, and tied to current concerns.

The cast lineup hints at this ambitious direction, with Jordan joined by Danai Gurira, Ruth Negga, Aubrey Plaza, Kenneth Branagh, and Lily Gladstone—a mix that promises layered performances and dynamic chemistry. According to Jordan, the long gap since the last movie allows him to reimagine the story without having to deal with the "baggage" of too closely emulating Pierce Brosnan or Steve McQueen. 

Thus, Jordan's adaptation is ready to transform the classic story into something more grounded, varied, and ultimately more relatable to today's audience, with Amazon MGM Studios scheduling its debut in 2027.
