Cinderella's stepsisters have long been portrayed as cruel obstacles in the princess's path, rarely receiving sympathy or depth in traditional retellings. Netflix is set to change that dynamic with 'Steps,' a new animated fantasy film that reframes the story through the eyes of a misunderstood stepsister.
The streamer unveiled the animated movie project with a first-look image introducing Lilith, a character described as more misjudged than malicious. Netflix also confirmed that comedian and actress Ali Wong will voice Lilith, while Stephanie Hsu will portray her sister, Margot. The animated feature is scheduled to arrive in 2026.
What is 'Steps' About?
'Steps' follows Lilith as she faces a major crisis: she is wrongly blamed for disrupting the Royal Ball using a stolen magic wand. Despite her innocence, her notorious reputation keeps everyone from believing her. Matters escalate when she accidentally transforms Margot into a frog, leaving the kingdom vulnerable to a power-hungry, prince-obsessed rival. Forced into an unexpected alliance, Lilith must work with Cinderella to restore balance to their fractured fairytale world. Their journey also brings them a helpful companion in the form of a charming troll, who plays a key role in repairing the chaos around them.

The film extends Wong's ongoing creative partnership with Netflix. She has collaborated with the platform across multiple genres, most notably in the Emmy-winning dark comedy series 'Beef.' Her past projects with Netflix include the fan-favourite romantic comedy 'Always Be My Maybe,' which she co-wrote and starred in, and the supernatural animated series 'Jentry Chau vs. the Underworld.'
Hsu is also no stranger to Netflix animation, having recently lent her voice to Adam Sandler's 'Leo' and the hit action series 'Blue Eye Samurai.' Additional cast members will be announced closer to release.
Who Is Bringing 'Steps' to Life?
Alyce Tzue and John Ripa direct the project. Tzue, a Student Academy Award gold medalist, makes her feature debut with this film, while Ripa brings experience from his work on 'Raya' and the 'Last Dragon.' They are supported by a high-profile production team that includes Amy Poehler, Jane Hartwell, and Kim Lessing. Steps continues Netflix's commitment to bold animated storytelling, following a record-breaking year that included the success of 'Kpop Demon Hunters' and the recent debut of Alex Woo's acclaimed 'In Your Dreams'.
'Steps' is set to premiere on Netflix in 2026.
