Neve Campbell is officially back in the 'Scream' universe—and she feels good about it. But she also stands firmly by her earlier decision to walk away.

Campbell became the franchise's original final girl as Sidney Prescott, leading the series from the very first film. In 2022, however, she announced she would not return for 'Scream VI' after deciding the salary offer did not reflect the value she had brought to the long-running horror series.

At the time, many fans wondered if she would ever come back. Now, she has returned for 'Scream 7,' directed by original franchise writer Kevin Williamson. During a recent appearance on CBS Mornings, Neve Campbell admitted she once believed her goodbye was permanent. When she stepped away, she truly thought that chapter of her life had closed.

Neve Campbell on Turning Down 'Scream 6'

Looking back, she explained that turning down 'Scream VI' came down to self-respect. Walking onto set under those circumstances would not have felt right to her. She knew her worth within the franchise and trusted her instincts.

That does not mean it was painless. On the first day of filming for 'Scream VI,' she felt sad knowing she was not there with the cast and crew. Still, she remained confident she had made the right call. When she spoke publicly about the pay dispute, she said it was simply about sharing her personal truth. The wave of fan support that followed meant a lot to her.

The franchise has faced other challenges in recent years. Melissa Barrera, who starred in the fifth and sixth films, was removed from 'Scream 7' in 2023 following social media posts about the Israel-Hamas conflict. Spyglass Media Group, the studio behind the films, described her comments as hate speech, a label Barrera pushed back against. Her co-star Jenna Ortega also exited the project. Original 'Scream 7' director Christopher Landon later stepped away as well, describing the experience as extremely difficult.

Now, 'Scream 7' marks a reunion for several familiar faces. David Arquette, Courteney Cox and Matthew Lillard are all returning, along with Jasmin Savoy Brown and Mason Gooding. New additions include Isabel May, who plays Sidney's daughter.

For Neve Campbell, stepping back into Sidney Prescott's shoes feels like a full-circle moment. She once believed her story with 'Scream' was over. Now, she is embracing the comeback—on her own terms.
