The studio has tapped 'Bad Boys for Life' writer Chris Bremner to craft the screenplay, sparking excitement among longtime fans who have been waiting for the show to return for its iconic mix of sci-fi action and bizarre alien humour. Even while the project is still in its early phases, rumours that Will Smith was the first to read the script have heightened expectations that well-known characters would make a comeback as the universe grows once more.

In 1997, the 'Men in Black' franchise debuted, presenting viewers with a covert government organization entrusted with monitoring extraterrestrial activity on Earth. Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones played Agents J and K in the first movie, which rapidly became a cultural phenomenon thanks to their comic chemistry, clever action scenes, and blend of humour and sci-fi adventure. 

he franchise developed its backstory and generated sequels over time, fusing cutting wit, buddy-cop relationships, and alien intrigue. Together, the four films have brought in between US$1.9 and US$1.904 billion worldwide, demonstrating that viewers continue to like the blend of humour, action, and otherworldly experiences.

However, the most recent edition, 'Men in Black: International' (2019), which stars Chris Hemsworth and Tessa Thompson in place of the original pair, performed poorly in comparison to the other movies and failed to fully recapture the enchantment. As a result, fans have been waiting ever since for a revival of the original vibe: aliens, secret missions, humour—and, ideally, the return of the agents they grew up with.

What's New—A Fresh 'Men in Black' Is in the Works

Its official as of December 2025, that Sony Pictures is working on a new 'Men in Black' film. Chris Bremner, who is well-known for his work on the action-comedy franchise 'Bad Boys for Life' and its sequel, has been hired by the studio to write the script for the upcoming film. At this point, the project remains in its early stages. No director or cast members have been confirmed.

However, insiders claim that Will Smith will be the first person to read the screenplay after Bremner finishes it, perhaps paving the way for the return of his beloved character, Agent J. Instead of rushing a reboot or spin-off, Sony seems eager to return to the fundamental elements that made the original 'Men in Black' films successful: clever alien-world building, clever dialogue, a balance of humour and action, and the chemistry of beloved characters.

Conversely, there are a number of significant unknowns, such as the lack of a director, the unconfirmed cast beyond rumours, and the lack of storyline specifics. It's unclear if the next film will pick up where 'International' left off, carry on the plot from the original trilogy, or take a completely different route. Additionally, fans will want to know if Sony will stick with its signature blend of comedy and science fiction, extraterrestrial mythology, and well-known side characters, or if it will take a more contemporary reboot approach.
