James Wan, known for shaping modern horror through the 'Conjuring' and 'Insidious' franchises, is officially stepping into the 'Paranormal Activity' universe for the first time. The filmmaker is joining forces with Blumhouse and Atomic Monster to help bring a new instalment of the iconic found-footage series to the screen. The project follows the recent merger of Wan's company, Atomic Monster, with Jason Blum's Blumhouse, uniting two of the genre's most influential creators.

Paramount has partnered with Blumhouse-Atomic Monster to co-finance, co-produce and distribute the film, signalling the studio's strong commitment to reviving the franchise. Oren Peli, who wrote and directed the original 2007 breakout hit that skyrocketed from a $15,000 budget to more than $194 million in global earnings, will also return as a producer through Solana Films. Jason Blum is producing as well, with the new theatrical instalment considered a major priority for both studios.

James Wan And Jason Blum on 'Paranormal Activity' Partnership

Wan expressed his admiration for the series, explaining that he has long appreciated the original film’s slow-building dread and its ability to evoke fear through minimal visuals. He shared that he is excited to help shape the franchise's evolution and expand the legacy that made 'Paranormal Activity' a cultural phenomenon.

Blum echoed the enthusiasm, noting that collaborating with Wan on a revived version of the franchise was exactly the kind of partnership he envisioned when their companies merged. He added that, unlike the famously tiny budget for the first 'Paranormal Activity' film, the team now has more resources—though the goal remains to deliver an experience so unsettling that audiences shouldn't watch it alone. Blum also thanked the Paramount team for their support as they work to bring the series back in a bold new way.

More About 'Paranormal Activity'

Since its debut, 'Paranormal Activity' has spawned seven films, including 'Paranormal Activity 2,' 'Paranormal Activity 3,' 'Paranormal Activity 4,' 'The Marked Ones,' 'The Ghost Dimension,' and the recent 'Next of Kin.' The franchise helped redefine found-footage horror and established Blumhouse as a powerhouse in genre filmmaking.

Paramount Pictures co-chairs Josh Greenstein and Dana Goldberg highlighted their excitement about reigniting the franchise with Wan and Blum leading the next chapter. They noted that Blum's role in transforming 'Paranormal Activity' into a global sensation, combined with Wan's signature storytelling style, sets the stage for a high-impact relaunch.

Horror veteran Steven Schneider will serve as executive producer for Room 101, Inc., with Michael Clear and Judson Scott executive producing for Blumhouse-Atomic Monster. Alayna Glasthal will oversee the project for the company as development officially moves forward.
