Robert Downey Jr. had some affectionate fun at Gwyneth Paltrow's expense during The Hollywood Reporter's 2025 Women in Entertainment breakfast gala, held at the Beverly Hills Hotel.
The actor took the stage to honour his longtime Marvel co-star as she received the 20th annual Sherry Lansing Leadership Award—but he couldn't resist joking about her well-known habit of forgetting key details about the Marvel Cinematic Universe, including her own roles.
Robert Downey Jr. Praised Gwyneth Paltrow
Downey Jr. praised Paltrow's intelligence while humorously pointing out that she regularly loses track of the basics of the MCU. He recalled a moment when Paltrow genuinely asked him who Tom Holland was, even though they had appeared in multiple films together. Robert Downey Jr. reminded her that Holland played Spider-Man and that she had acted with him more than once, a memory that seemed to surprise her.

He then shifted to a more heartfelt tone, applauding Paltrow for managing her lifestyle brand Goop between filming scenes for 'Iron Man,' all while raising her children and maintaining a thriving acting career.
Robert Downey Jr. and Gwyneth Paltrow's Film
Paltrow and Downey Jr. portrayed one of the MCU’s most iconic couples—Pepper Potts and Tony Stark—from the franchise's very beginning in 2008 through 'Avengers: Endgame' in 2019. Despite her long tenure in the superhero universe, Gwyneth Paltrow has repeatedly gone viral for forgetting she appeared in certain films, including the time she insisted she was never in 'Spider-Man: Homecoming.'
During an episode of 'The Chef Show' in 2019, director Jon Favreau and chef Roy Choi had to remind her that she filmed a full scene opposite Tom Holland, leading to a moment of genuine shock when she finally realised they were right.

Her MCU confusion resurfaced again in 2024 when she questioned Downey Jr.'s announcement that he would be returning to the franchise as Doctor Doom, openly admitting she didn't understand the twist and wondering if he was "the villain now."
Fans are hoping that by the time 'Avengers: Doomsday' arrives in theatres on 18th December 2026, Gwyneth Paltrow will have brushed up on her Marvel lore—although her mix-ups continue to provide endless entertainment.
