Before stepping into the shoes of iconic DC villain Lex Luthor, Nicholas Hoult was actually in the running to play the Man of Steel himself. The British actor, known for his versatility and charm, recently shared the story of how he auditioned for 'Superman' on the same day as David Corenswet, the actor who ultimately landed the coveted role.
Nicholas Hoult and David Corenswet lit up 'Jimmy Kimmel Live!' as they teamed up to tease what’s in store for James Gunn’s highly anticipated 'Superman' movie. Guest host Diego Luna took the opportunity to ask about their audition experience, prompting Hoult to admit that he did indeed try out for the role of 'Superman'. Corenswet confirmed that they crossed paths on the lot that same day.

Nicholas Hoult Shares Experience of His Encounter
At the time, Nicholas Hoult was one of the final contenders for the superhero role. Reflecting on that day, he recalled walking off set after performing a scene and feeling fairly confident. But what occurred next left an everlasting imprint. Turning a corner on the studio lot, Hoult saw Corenswet sitting in a lone sunbeam — almost as if he were charging up like 'Superman' himself.
Hoult remembered walking over to greet Corenswet and instantly noticing details that made him a natural fit for the role. He noted that Corenswet was slightly taller, had a stronger jawline, thicker hair, bigger hands, and even a deeper voice. In that moment, Hoult thought to himself that Corenswet was the perfect 'Superman' and genuinely felt happy for him.

While Hoult didn't get to wear the red cape, his journey with the movie didn't end there. Not long after, it was confirmed that he would portray Lex Luthor, Superman’s infamous archenemy. Corenswet, for his part, expressed admiration for Hoult's work and called their initial meeting — both dressed as Clark Kent — slightly surreal but deeply enjoyable.
He also shared that when he learned Hoult had accepted the role of Lex Luthor, he immediately recognised how significant that casting choice was. In his words, a superhero is only as compelling as their villain, and Hoult brings the necessary weight and presence to the part.
