A biopic based on Snoop Dogg’s life and career is back in motion at Universal Pictures, with recent updates revealing significant changes to the creative team.
Originally announced in 2022, the project had ‘Black Panther’ co-writer Joe Robert Cole set to write the script, with Allen Hughes — known for ‘Menace II Society’ and ‘The Defiant Ones’ — attached as director. While updates have been scarce since then, Universal recently confirmed that the project is still in active development and progressing well.
New reports revealed that Craig Brewer—whose directing credits include ‘Coming 2 America’, ‘Hustle & Flow’, ‘Footloose’ and ‘Dolemite Is My Name’—has now taken the helm. Brewer is said to be reworking elements of Cole’s original screenplay.

In the latest casting update, Brewer has reportedly brought in Jonathan Daviss, best known for his role in the Netflix series ‘Outer Banks’, to portray the legendary rapper. Following the announcement, Snoop Dogg shared photos of himself with the young actor on social media, writing that it was time for his “nephew” to step up. Daviss also reacted to the news, posting “Bow wow wow” in what seemed to be a playful nod to Snoop’s signature style.
Production Details Still Under Wraps
The news was initially reported by Deadline, which also confirmed that Snoop Dogg will serve as a producer on the film, joined by Brian Grazer and Sara Ramaker, president of Death Row Pictures.
Although the project is picking up momentum, it has not yet been given an official title, a confirmed supporting cast, or a set production timeline. While the film is expected to explore Snoop’s early years and his rise within the hip-hop scene, it remains to be seen how much of his storied career will be included.
