'Rick and Morty' has once again nodded to its long-running fascination with Tori Amos in the latest episode of its eighth season. The animated series had previously featured a reference to the American singer-songwriter in the season six episode ‘Night Family’, where Jerry found common ground with his Night Person over a shared love for Amos.

The most recent episode, titled ‘The Rick, The Mort & The Ugly’, premiered on 8th June. In it, Head of Morty Replication Rick returns to his farmhouse only to find it wrecked by a group of Rick raiders. Among the mess, a crude message is seen on the floor that reads, “What grown man listens to Tori Amos?”, scrawled using excrement. Rick then retrieves his copy of Amos’s debut album ‘Little Earthquakes’, only to find its cover defaced — the raiders had drawn a turd behind Amos along with the words, “Here’s some more sh*t for you’re a** SOYBOY!” The episode later includes the title track ‘Little Earthquakes’ in a climactic fight scene.

Dan Harmon, the show’s co-creator, has previously shared his admiration for Amos. He mentioned in an interview that he used to listen to her music on loop, describing it as both soothing and sharp-edged — “a lullaby filled with venom.” He added that while Amos had the explosive presence of a pop artist like Katy Perry, she came across as “a lot cooler”.

‘Rick and Morty’ Renewed Through Season 12, With Anime Spin-Off Underway

Now in its eighth season, ‘Rick and Morty’ shows no signs of slowing down. The series was renewed through to season 12 in an announcement made at New York Comic Con last year by executive producers Dan Harmon and Scott Marder. Michael Ouweleen, president of Adult Swim, remarked that from its debut, the show had raised the bar for adult animation and continues to evolve creatively.

In addition to the main series, a spin-off titled ‘Rick and Morty: The Anime’ premiered last year. The project is helmed by Takashi Sano, known for directing ‘Tower of God’.
