Ryan Gosling made an exciting appearance at San Diego Comic-Con recently, offering fans an exclusive preview of his upcoming sci-fi comedy, 'Project Hail Mary'. The 44-year-old actor and producer introduced new footage from the highly anticipated space adventure, adapted from Andy Weir’s 2021 best-selling novel.
In 'Project Hail Mary', Gosling stars as Ryland Grace, a middle school science teacher unexpectedly tasked with a mission that could save humanity. Set 11.9 light-years from Earth, the story follows Grace as he investigates why multiple stars — including the sun — are dying, threatening life across the galaxy.
Gosling said the movie was touching and had surprising moments of humour. He explained how the role pushed him to explore new creative territory and likened his own experience making the film to that of his character — an ordinary person trying to survive an extraordinary, high-stakes challenge.

The movie is directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, famous for 'Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse'. The script is written by Drew Goddard, who also turned 'The Martian' into a film. All three creatives joined Gosling, along with author Andy Weir, for a lively panel in Hall H, where they revealed key details and debuted the first five minutes of the movie.
'Project Hail Mary' Scene
The opening scene left the Comic-Con audience laughing as they watched Gosling’s character awaken from cryogenic sleep, disoriented and dishevelled. The actor humorously likened his appearance to a “space caveman” wearing a bizarre bodysuit, something he joked could become a future Comic-Con cosplay favourite.
Gosling also revealed how he worked closely with Goddard and Weir to layer his character’s evolution—from frightened survivor to determined problem-solver. He said what made Ryland Grace relatable was his very human reaction to the impossible task ahead—he’s terrified, but still moves forward. The character, once a man who had given up on himself on Earth, finds new purpose and strength as the mission unfolds.

The footage and teaser trailer hint that 'Project Hail Mary' will feature long stretches of isolation for Grace, but not entirely alone—an alien companion known as Rocky joins the journey. Although details about Rocky were kept mostly under wraps, Gosling and the team shared that the alien is a mineral-like, five-limbed being brought to life through a mix of puppetry and CGI by The Jim Henson Company. The filmmakers promised that despite the alien’s faceless design, audiences would form a deep emotional bond with the character.
Miller explained that beyond its science-fiction thrills, 'Project Hail Mary' is ultimately a story about hope, connection, and the resilience of humanity. Phil Lord added a humorous twist, saying the film explores whether two adult men can truly become friends in just six days—when the fate of the universe depends on it.
'Project Hail Mary' is set to hit theatres on 20th March, 2026.
