Netflix has released the first official look at the third season of its 'Monster' anthology series, created by Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan. The latest entry, ‘Monster: The Ed Gein Story' features Charlie Hunnam portraying the infamous murderer Ed Gein, who earned the chilling nickname "The Butcher of Plainfield."

Ed Gein, convicted of a single murder in the 1950s yet suspected of multiple others, became infamous for his chilling obsession with collecting human remains. His crimes have inspired some of Hollywood’s most iconic fictional killers, including Norman Bates in 'Psycho' and Buffalo Bill in 'The Silence of the Lambs.' Gein spent the latter part of his life in a mental institution and died in 1984.

What is the New 'Monster' Series About?

The 'Monster' series focuses on the frozen fields of 1950s rural Wisconsin, chronicling how a seemingly mild-mannered recluse, Eddie Gein, lived quietly on a decaying farm while secretly maintaining a house of horrors. Isolation, psychosis, and an all-consuming obsession with his mother drove Gein’s crimes, which ultimately shaped the blueprint for modern horror and inspired countless fictional monsters in film.

'Monster: The Ed Gein' Story emphasises how Gein's transformation from an ordinary man into a horrifying figure illustrates that monsters are often created by circumstances, society, and personal obsession rather than born inherently evil. The series is set to premiere globally on Netflix on 3rd October.

Charlie Hunnam, best known for his seven-season role as Jackson "Jax" Teller on 'Sons of Anarchy,' was announced as the lead last September. Hunnam's recent projects include Zack Snyder's 'Rebel Moon – Part One: A Child of Fire' on Netflix, as well as major films like 'Pacific Rim,' 'King Arthur: Legend of the Sword,' and 'Crimson Peak.'

Origin of 'Monster' Series

The 'Monster' series kicked off with 'Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story,' featuring Evan Peters, and quickly earned widespread praise along with several Emmy nods. Its second instalment, 'Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story,' focused on the Menendez brothers and featured Nicholas Chavez, Cooper Koch, and others.

Looking ahead, Ryan Murphy has already announced that season 4 will explore the story of accused axe murderer Lizzie Borden. Ella Beatty, daughter of Warren Beatty and Annette Bening, has been cast in the lead role, with Rebecca Hall and Vicky Krieps joining the cast.
