Ryan Reynolds has shared how creating an environment where people feel comfortable disagreeing with him has become a core part of his leadership philosophy in both filmmaking and business.
Speaking at a leadership event hosted by The Wall Street Journal, the 49-year-old actor and entrepreneur explained that blind agreement on set or in the office can be dangerous. He believes that when people only agree with him because he is in charge, creative quality suffers. In his view, open discussion and respectful pushback are essential for producing better ideas and stronger results.
Ryan Reynolds's Leadership Approach
As the face behind successful ventures like Aviation Gin, Mint Mobile and his production company Maximum Effort, Ryan Reynolds has taken his hands-on leadership approach beyond Hollywood. His experience producing, co-writing and starring in 'Deadpool & Wolverine,' which became the highest-grossing R-rated movie of all time, has further shaped his views on collaboration and creative accountability.

Reflecting on his earlier career, Reynolds admitted that he used to hold back his opinions on set out of fear or insecurity. During the time of 'Green Lantern,' he felt intimidated by the scale of responsibility and leaned more toward obedience than creative participation. Over time, he realised that if his name was going to be associated with a project’s success or failure, he needed to take ownership of its creative direction.
Ryan Reynolds Values Creative Criticism
Now, Ryan Reynolds willingly puts forward rough ideas in meetings specifically to invite criticism and alternative thinking. He believes that doing so encourages team members, especially quieter ones, to feel more confident in speaking up. This approach, according to him, often sparks better, more refined creative solutions.

Despite his massive success and popularity, Ryan Reynolds remains aware of how public perception can differ from reality. He explained that his children, for example, only see him being celebrated and viewed as successful, which is why he actively talks to them about his failures. He wants them to understand that setbacks and mistakes are essential building blocks for growth, not something to be hidden or ignored.
Through his evolving leadership style, Ryan Reynolds continues to emphasise that humility, open dialogue, and encouraging different viewpoints are key to long-term creative and professional success.
