Sequel to 'The Super Mario Bros.' Movie Set for April 2026

'The Super Mario Bros.' Movie is officially getting a sequel, and this time, Mario is going to space, after shattering box office records and rekindling nostalgia for die-hard Nintendo fans. Nintendo, Illumination, and Universal Pictures have confirmed the sequel's title as 'The Super Mario Galaxy' Movie, inspired by one of Mario's most iconic and visually stunning games.

From the Mushroom Kingdom to the Stars: What the Sequel Promises

The original 'The Super Mario Bros.' Movie, released in 2023, followed Brooklyn plumbers Mario and Luigi as they were sucked into a magical world full of vibrant landscapes and unforgettable characters. It introduced audiences to Princess Peach, Bowser, Toad, and Donkey Kong in a fast-paced adventure that ended with Mario and Luigi saving the Mushroom Kingdom. The movie, which became the second-highest-grossing animated film of all time with a global box office total of over $1.3 billion, demonstrated the enormous wanting for excellent video game adaptations among the masses.

The sequel is now expected to go even farther, literally. The popular 2007 Wii game 'Super Mario Galaxy' served as the idea for the sequel, 'The Super Mario Galaxy' Movie, as well as the source of its title. Although the game's celestial backdrop will serve as a major inspiration for the movie, producer Chris Meledandri confirmed that it won't be a direct adaptation. Cast, Creative Team & Release Info

'The Super Mario Galaxy' Movie is scheduled to open in theaters in the United States on 3rd April, 2026, and Japan on 24th April, 2026. Chris Pratt is officially returning as Mario, Anya Taylor-Joy is back as Princess Peach, Charlie Day is back as Luigi, Jack Black is back as Bowser, Keegan-Michael Key is back as Toad, and Kevin Michael Richardson is back as Kamek. For viewers of the first movie, this dependable casting helps guarantee continuity and familiarity.

Behind the scenes, the production is once again being directed by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic, with screenplay writer Matthew Fogel returning.
