As she candidly expresses her hopes for the eagerly anticipated third installment of the cherished musical franchise, Amanda Seyfried is once again igniting enthusiasm among 'Mamma Mia!' fans. After captivating audiences around the world as Sophie in the previous two seasons, Seyfried is now advocating for the addition of new characters to the realm of ABBA-fueled bliss, particularly emerging talents like Sydney Sweeney and Sabrina Carpenter.

In addition to igniting online fan discussions, her fervent support for the pair has given 'Mamma Mia! 3,' a project that has apparently been in production with producers investigating story concepts, returning cast members, and new character possibilities, a fresh life. As Seyfried talks nostalgically about returning to the Greek island-inspired world that catapulted her to international fame, it's clear that she loves the franchise and is excited to see how a new generation of musicians will fit in with its legendary musical heritage.

Sophie Returns—and Maybe a Whole New Generation

Renowned for her role as Sophie in the 'Mamma Mia!' films, Amanda Seyfried has shown excitement about a long-rumoured third installment in the franchise. The original film, released in 2008, became a global hit and starred a star-studded cast including Meryl Streep, Colin Firth, Pierce Brosnan, and Julie Walters. Ten years later, the musical's success was further cemented with 'Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again,' serving as both a prequel and a sequel.

At the 2025 Governors Awards, Seyfried told Entertainment Tonight that she is "pretty sure Mamma Mia 3 is a done deal," and that she sees Sophie as a mother now, a logical progression from her earlier performances.

Seyfried's Dream Team: Sabrina Carpenter & Sydney Sweeney

In her comments, Seyfried hinted that Sabrina Carpenter might be Sophie's cousin rather than her daughter and proposed the idea of bringing her into the 'Mamma Mia!' universe. "Maybe she has a cousin she hasn't seen in a while, and that could be Sabrina Carpenter," Seyfried said in support of her idea. She also added that she would be thrilled if Sydney Sweeney joined the sequel: "And then Sydney Sweeney could show up…there's a bunch of girls that really want to be a part of it, and I'm all for it."

Seyfried's push comes on the heels of past rumours linking Carpenter to the project, with 'Mamma Mia!' producer Judy Craymer previously hinting at her involvement. When it comes to Carpenter, Seyfried has welcomed the prospect of age-defying casting, stating in a different interview that she would "make it happen" if Carpenter wanted to portray her daughter. As for Sweeney, the actress has expressed her own love for the franchise—in 2023 she told Variety that she's always wanted to go to Greece and that 'Mamma Mia!' would be "really fun" to be part of.

What to Expect in 'Mamma Mia 3': Story, Cast & Possibilities

'Mamma Mia! 3' is reportedly very much in its early stage of development, despite the lack of an official release date. There is already a script, according to producer Judy Craymer. Seyfried shared some hints about what she envisions: she expects the three dads (from the earlier films) will return, and while the mystery of "which dad is Sophie's" may persist, she believes it "doesn't matter."

She also made a joke about Christine Baranski and Julie Walters returning, "singing and looking gorgeous...somewhere tropical...and ABBA will be playing," and that Meryl Streep's character Donna would show up "as a ghost." A cozy, melodic, and character-driven follow-up that combines nostalgia with fresh dynamics is what Seyfried envisions overall. Carpenter's introduction as Sophie's cousin or daughter would create new story opportunities, and Sweeney's participation may bring in fresh vigor and generational tension.

Fans of the franchise have long speculated about where a third film could go, and with Seyfried's backing and Craymer's confirmation of a script, the project now feels more real than ever. Whether 'Mamma Mia! 3' will move from talk to production remains to be seen—but if it happens, it could be a joyous return to the sun-soaked, ABBA-fueled world that audiences fell in love with.
