Rising pop sensation Sombr found himself in an unexpectedly awkward moment during his recent live concert when a playful on-stage prank went hilariously wrong. In order entertain his audience, the singer, who is well-known for his upbeat concerts and witty banter, chose to contact Selena Gomez as part of his "Call Your Ex" segment. 

However, instead of Gomez picking up, Sombr accidentally dialed her husband—music producer Benny Blanco. What began as a light-hearted joke quickly turned into a viral moment of surprise, laughter, and secondhand embarrassment that had both fans and fellow artists buzzing online.

The Setup: Sombr's Live Bit and the Unexpected Call

At a recent live performance, 20-year-old American singer Sombr invited the audience into his playful "Call Your Ex on Stage" bit, announcing: "I'm going to be calling my ex instead of you guys calling your ex." He then pulled out his phone, dialled what he believed to be the number of Selena Gomez, and held the speaker up to the mic saying: "Hello? Selena?"

It was a deeper masculine voice that answered, not the Disney-era celebrity. Realization dawned: Sombr had reached Selena's husband/producer Benny Blanco. The moment turned visibly awkward as he asked: "Is this Benny Blanco?" before quickly trying to explain himself and hang up.

Why It Went Wrong & Reactions Around It

The gag went off the rails because Sombr mis-dialled or mis-identified the number, and the context made it extra sensitive—Selena Gomez and Benny Blanco had married just weeks earlier on 27th September, 2025. The lighthearted tone changed when the call went to Blanco rather than Gomez. Although Blanco's reaction seemed cool but firm, the incident highlighted how public pranks can inadvertently involve private relationships.

"I'm sorry, I was trying to call Selena," Sombr said in an effort to save the moment. "You know who I assumed it was. It's awkward. I apologize!" and quickly hung up. Fans and social media reacted swiftly; some thought the moment was hilarious, while others shuddered at the prank that crossed boundaries. Discussions over the boundaries between personal and on-stage humour were prompted by the occurrence.

His live performances has been hailed by audiences as "mesmerising and electrifying," particularly for his rendition of hits like 'Back to Friends' and '12 to 12.' 

Looking ahead, Sombr isn't slowing down: he's slated to perform on major platforms such as Saturday Night Live and has festival appearances in the pipeline, including a mention of next-year's Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival.
