Five years after 'The Rise of Skywalker,' Ryan Gosling will appear in the stand-alone movie named 'Star Wars: Starfighter.' Production began early, in the fall of 2025, and the movie will be released in theaters on 28th May, 2027. The recently revealed first look image, shows Gosling and Flynn Gray dressed up by the Mediterranean Sea, suggesting new settings and characters that are not part of the Skywalker plot.

A New Era Begins: First Look & Setting Revealed

The first official photograph of 'Star Wars: Starfighter,' which features Ryan Gosling and co-star Flynn Gray in costume with the Mediterranean Sea as their backdrop, was released by Lucasfilm and director Shawn Levy. This entry may explore new territory for 'Star Wars,' possibly combining typical space-adventure with sequences on or near water.

Director Levy captioned the image, "Somewhere in the Mediterranean Sea #Starfighter," with Gosling looking wind-blown and ruggedly clad. 'Starfighter,' which takes place some five years after the events of 'Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker' (2019), is supposedly to be a "standalone adventure," according to Levy, rather than a prequel or sequel. The narrative will introduce completely new characters in a previously unexplored era of the Star Wars timeline.

Cast, Crew & What We Know So Far

Mia Goth, Amy Adams, Aaron Pierre, Simon Bird, Jamael Westman, Daniel Ings, and Matt Smith, who seems to play the adversary, round out the cast, which is led by Ryan Gosling, who also serves as executive producer. Jonathan Tropper wrote the screenplay, and Shawn Levy and Kathleen Kennedy of Lucasfilm are in charge of production.

Gosling said there is "no more suitable director for this specific subject than Shawn," and that the script has "such a terrific plot with great and original characters," as well as "so much passion and adventure." Making this movie is a “dream come true,” Levy added, describing 'Star Wars' as a defining influence in his own life and applauding the opportunity to present something both familiar and new.

With the first image released, there's excitement over how Starfighter might blend classic Star Wars aesthetics with fresh visuals–including possible scenes at sea or nautical action, which isn't typical for the franchise. Although a lot of the plot is still unknown at this time, fans are excited about the prospect of fresh experiences, unique characters, and a daring vision under Shawn Levy.
