In a recent chat, Ed Sheeran talked candidly about declining a chance to play what would have been the first concert in space. The singer gave an explanation for his refusal in an interview with Scott Mills of BBC Radio 2. At the same time, he has just released his new album 'Play'—a body of work that seems to embrace joy, cross‑cultural exploration, and creative renewal after some darker times.
Why He Refused the Space Gig?
Ed Sheeran, said in the BBC Radio 2 interview that the prospect of performing in space both excited and frightened him. Even if a lot of individuals may be receiving offers like this, he stated that he does not want to be a "guinea pig" for something that is still risky. His decision was heavily influenced by the fact that he and his wife, Cherry Seaborn, are parents to girls, Lyra Antarctica and Jupiter.

He made it clear that he would not risk his safety or be absent for the sake of celebrity or a Guinness World Record. He went on to say that he would prefer to explore some parts of Earth first, like Greenland, and that space flight will be more alluring until it is as common place as flying in an airplane.
'Play:' A New Album with Colour, Culture and Joy
On 12th September, Ed Sheeran's eighth studio album, 'Play' was made available through Atlantic Records and Gingerbread Man Records. 'Play,' according to Sheeran, was a reaction to a challenging time in his life. He wanted to rediscover the joy, colour, inventiveness, and lighter moments of life that music offers.
The Bigger Picture: Albums in Tandem & His Priorities
While 'Play' marks a vibrant, explorative turn, Ed Sheeran also revealed he is working on another album called 'Rewind' at the same time. He says 'Rewind' will lean more into nostalgia, forming what he considers "twin albums" with 'Play'—with similar origins but different emotional directions. He’s focusing on what feels true to him: making music that reflects both fun and responsibility, and staying present with family rather than chasing spectacle.
