Stellan Skarsgård has hinted that the 'Mamma Mia!' team may be exploring creative ways to bring Meryl Streep's beloved character back for a possible third film.
Talk of 'Mamma Mia! 3' has been circulating for years. Producer Judy Craymer previously shared that the franchise was always intended to be a trilogy. The original film premiered in 2008, followed by 'Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again' in 2018.
Stellan Skarsgård on Meryl Streep's Future
After winning Best Supporting Actor in a Motion Picture at the Golden Globes for 'Sentimental Value,' Skarsgård addressed questions about Streep's future in the series. In the second film, her character Donna dies off-screen from an undisclosed illness. However, Skarsgård suggested that in movies, anything is possible and that efforts are underway behind the scenes to find a way to bring her character back.

Several other cast members have also fueled excitement about a potential third instalment. Christine Baranski, who played Tanya, has previously met with Craymer to discuss the project. Pierce Brosnan later confirmed that he, too, had spoken with the producer about returning.
Rumours have also swirled around new additions to the cast. Last year, singer Sabrina Carpenter was linked to the franchise after Craymer hinted at her involvement. Amanda Seyfried, who plays Sophie, later shared that she would love to see Carpenter join the film, along with her 'Housemaid' co-star Sydney Sweeney.

More recently, Seyfried added to the buzz during an interview at the Governors Awards. She said she feels confident that 'Mamma Mia 3' is happening and shared her excitement about the idea of Sophie as a mother.
She imagined a storyline that could introduce new characters, possibly played by Carpenter and Sweeney, and said she fully supports bringing fresh faces into the joyful world of 'Mamma Mia!'.
