The stars of 'Stranger Things' are opening up about the gruelling process behind filming the Netflix phenomenon's highly anticipated fifth and final season—a production that stretched nearly the entire length of 2024.

Cast members Finn Wolfhard, Charlie Heaton, and Joe Keery described season 5 as the most demanding chapter yet, both physically and emotionally. Heaton, who plays Jonathan Byers, likened the experience to running a marathon—one that begins with excitement and energy but quickly tests endurance midway through. Wolfhard added that when one person's energy faltered, the rest of the cast and crew stepped up to lift each other, reinforcing the sense of teamwork that has defined the show since its debut.

More on 'Stranger Things' Fifth Season

The 'Stranger Things' ensemble—including Millie Bobby Brown, Gaten Matarazzo, Caleb McLaughlin, Natalia Dyer, Maya Hawke, and Noah Schnapp—gathered in Los Angeles ahead of the world premiere to reflect on their shared journey. What began as a small-scale production in 2016 has now grown into one of Netflix's largest and most ambitious undertakings.

Filming for season 5 began on 8th January 2024, after delays caused by the dual Hollywood strikes. By July, co-creator Ross Duffer revealed that the team had reached the halfway mark, and by 20th December—347 days later—production had officially wrapped. The Duffer Brothers later confirmed that they captured over 650 hours of footage, describing the season as the equivalent of "eight blockbuster movies" in scale and scope.

'Stranger Things' Cast Shares Working on Season Finale

The upcoming episodes will roll out in two parts: Volume I launches on 26th November, featuring four episodes with run times ranging from 54 to 90 minutes, while Volume II drops on Christmas Day. The grand finale—a feature-length, two-hour episode—will premiere both in select theatres and on Netflix on New Year's Eve.

Caleb McLaughlin, who portrays Lucas Sinclair, shared that while the year-long schedule was exhausting, the cast entered it fully prepared for the challenge. He admitted that maintaining focus and energy was tough but credited the ensemble's bond for keeping morale high.

Millie Bobby Brown, who returns as Eleven, reflected on how the cast and crew's shared passion fueled their stamina. She noted that while the schedule was demanding, breaks between filming blocks helped everyone recharge. Brown credited the crew's dedication—particularly those working longer hours—for keeping the production running smoothly.

Wolfhard specifically praised camera operator Nick Müller, who trained for months in advance to withstand the physical toll of shooting long days with a heavy rig. He described Müller's commitment as emblematic of the entire team's work ethic.

The cast also marvelled at how far the production has come since the show's early days. Brown and Schnapp recalled how season 1 felt like an indie film compared to the massive, multi-stage operation behind season 5, which involved hundreds more crew members and far more elaborate sets. Wolfhard described walking onto the new Atlanta set as stepping into a cinematic universe—one that dwarfed everything they'd done before.

Despite the intensity, the 'Stranger Things' stars agreed that mutual support kept them going. Dyer described the experience as feeling like "summer camp," with everyone living close by and spending nearly every day together. Hawke added that the group leaned on one another emotionally throughout the process, ensuring no one felt overwhelmed by the long months of filming.
