'Stranger Things' Creators Confirm Eddie Munson Won't Return in Final Season

Fans of 'Stranger Things' have long hoped that Eddie Munson, the lovable metalhead who was first introduced in Season 4, will make a comeback in the fifth and final season of the show. However, those hopes are now firmly in the past. The show's creators, Matt and Ross Duffer, recently stated in an interview that Eddie's actor, Joseph Quinn, will not be returning for Season 5. 

The Duffer Brothers clarified that Eddie's death was final and that the plot will continue without him, despite fan hypotheses and internet rumours suggesting a miraculous return. Although many may be disappointed, the choice allows for the show's dramatic ending while maintaining the emotional effect of Eddie's valiant farewell.

Joseph Quinn became a breakout sensation in 2022's 'Stranger Things' Season 4, by bringing life to Eddie Munson—a Dungeons & Dragons enthusiast, heavy-metal guitarist, and unlikely hero. Despite Eddie's short tenure on the show, his storyline made an impact. In the Upside Down, his death was one of the most heartbreaking and valiant scenes in the series, as he gave up his life to save his companions. Quinn's performance brought him both immediate public affection and critical acclaim, inspiring a plethora of fan art, tributes, and theories regarding Eddie's possible comeback.

Theories ranged from resurrection by Vecna to alternate dimensions. Even Quinn supported the idea in past interviews, further fueling speculation. Fans have been longing after him ever since then, because of his chemistry with the actors, especially with Dustin (Gaten Matarazzo), which made the character's exit so heartbreaking.

The Duffer Brothers Confirm Eddie's Story Is Over

The Duffer Brothers have officially confirmed that Eddie Munson's tale will not be revived in Season 5, despite months of speculation. Matt Duffer stated, "I love that Joe Quinn is toying with people! But no, he's dead." He added that the actor's busy film schedule would have made it difficult anyway, joking, "He's shot like five movies since...When the hell he has got time to come and shoot Stranger Things?" This statement from the creators definitely puts a firm end to speculation and reiterates that the character's death was not only narratively important but permanent.

The Duffers acknowledged Quinn's incredible impact on the show, but also emphasized the importance of letting powerful moments stay intact. In addition to being a dramatic turn of events, Eddie's passing was a pivotal sacrifice that influenced the plot and emotional stakes of Season 4. Reviving him would lessen that effect, something the creators are clearly unwilling to do.

What to Expect from Season 5 Without Eddie

Now that viewers know Eddie won't return for Stranger Things' final season, they can look forward to the show's return. Season 5 is set to release in three parts: Volume 1 drops on 26th November, Volume 2 follows on 25th December, and the final chapter arrives on 31st December. With important characters like Eleven, Mike, Will, and Vecna making a last appearance, the season will center on resolving the main conflict between Hawkins' children and the Upside Down's forces. Even though Joseph Quinn won't be returning, the impact of his character will probably last the entire season.
