Susan Egan, the voice behind Megara in Disney's 'Hercules,' shared insights into how her own life helped shape her iconic performance. Speaking at the World Princess Week Celebration at Disneyland Resort recently, Susan Egan discussed the contrast between voicing the jaded, sarcastic Meg and playing the kindhearted Belle in the Broadway adaptation of 'Beauty and the Beast.'
Susan Egan's Life Helped her in Playing Megara in 'Hercules'
Susan Egan explained that while Belle is generous and heroic, Meg's character is more cynical, having sold her soul to Hades to save a boyfriend who ultimately left her. The actress noted that, unlike Belle, Meg felt closer to her real-life personality, making the role a natural fit. Egan jokingly added that her "series of bad boyfriends" had primed her for the character's sharp wit and quick comebacks.

She also highlighted that Meg’s iconic song, 'I Won't Say (I'm In Love),' was not the first musical number written for the character. Initially, Meg had a soaring ballad similar to Alan Menken's style in 'The Little Mermaid,' but animators realised it didn’t match Meg's personality. Menken then composed a new song about denial, performed as a duet between Meg and the Muses, capturing the character's blend of humour and vulnerability.
