For more than a decade, 'The Conjuring' universe has terrified audiences, transforming the real-life paranormal cases of Ed (Patrick Wilson) and Lorraine Warren (Vera Farmiga) into one of horror's most successful franchises. With 'The Conjuring: Last Rites' set to conclude what James Wan calls the first "phase" of the series, the filmmaker explained that now felt like the right moment to pause—though the future of the franchise may not be completely finished.

Wan noted that the creative team has been working within this world for nearly 13 years and that the time felt right to end on a high note rather than risk running the series into the ground. He described the film as a bittersweet farewell, one that protects the legacy of the saga. Still, Wan admitted that nothing is ever completely final, leaving the possibility open for new stories somewhere down the line.

The End of One Chapter, But Not the Whole Story

Although Phase 1 is closing with 'The Conjuring: Last Rites,' Wan didn't completely dismiss the idea of a Phase 2. He acknowledged that the real-life cases of the Warrens are filled with rich lore and compelling characters, meaning there are still many stories left to explore if the time feels right. For now, however, his focus is on giving the current chapter a respectful and fitting conclusion.

Fan demand continues to shape conversations about the franchise's future, especially when it comes to one character who has yet to receive his own film: 'The Crooked Man.' Introduced in 'The Conjuring 2,' the eerie figure quickly became a fan favourite. Wan revealed that fans regularly reach out asking about the character's spin-off, and he considers the 'Crooked Man' a perfect candidate for a standalone story. Unlike the mainline films, spin-offs offer more creative freedom, making it possible for such projects to come to life even outside the Warrens' central narrative.

The Future of 'The Conjuring'

While 'The Conjuring: Last Rites' will serve as a climactic closing chapter for this era of the franchise, the supernatural universe James Wan helped build is far from gone. Whether it takes the form of new Warrens case files or long-awaited spin-offs like 'The Crooked Man,' the door remains open for future hauntings.

'The Conjuring: Last Rites' arrives in theatres on 5th September, marking both an ending and a potential new beginning for one of horror’s most enduring sagas.
