Cynthia Erivo will not be attending the 83rd Golden Globe Awards, even though she has earned a nomination for the second year in a row.
The 'Wicked' star is once again nominated for Best Actress in a Motion Picture, Musical or Comedy at the 2026 Golden Globes for her role in 'Wicked: For Good.' She received the same nomination last year for the first film in the franchise. With this latest nod, Cynthia Erivo made history as the first Black woman to be nominated twice in this category. Despite the milestone, she will miss the ceremony on 11th January.
Why is Cynthia Erivo Skipping The Golden Globes?
The reason for her absence is a major stage commitment in London. Erivo is currently deeply involved in rehearsals and production for 'Dracula' on the West End. The play runs from 4th February through 31st May and features a one-woman performance in which she takes on 23 different characters, including the iconic vampire himself.

Cynthia Erivo has openly shared that the role is both thrilling and terrifying for her. She has admitted feeling genuinely scared by the challenge but also energised by how bold, chaotic, and unconventional the production is.
Cynthia Erivo's Return to The West End
'Dracula' marks Erivo's return to the West End after her acclaimed performance as Celie in the 2015 revival of 'The Colour Purple,' a role that later earned her a Tony Award-winning run on Broadway. Since then, she has continued to balance stage and screen work, including a standout appearance in 'Jesus Christ Superstar' at the Hollywood Bowl in August 2025. That performance took place during the break between 'Wicked' and its sequel.
'Wicked: For Good' has been widely praised and received five Golden Globe nominations this year, one more than the film earned in 2025. The nominations include Cinematic and Box Office Achievement, Best Original Song for 'No Place Like Home' and 'The Girl in the Bubble,' a supporting actress nod for Ariana Grande, and Erivo's lead actress nomination.

Cynthia Erivo is competing in her category against Rose Byrne, Kate Hudson, Chase Infiniti, Amanda Seyfried, and Emma Stone. Grande is nominated alongside Emily Blunt, Elle Fanning, Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas, Amy Madigan, and Teyana Taylor.
This year's nomination brings Erivo's total Golden Globe nods to five. In 2022, she was recognised for her portrayal of Aretha Franklin in 'Genius: Aretha Franklin.' In 2020, she earned two nominations for her work in 'Harriet,' including one for Best Actress in a Drama and another for Best Original Song for 'Stand Up.'
The 83rd annual Golden Globe Awards will be held at the Beverly Hilton in Los Angeles on 11th January, airing live at 8 p.m. EST on CBS and streaming on Paramount+.
