Billy Crystal Recalls Iconic ‘When Harry Met Sally’ Line While Announcing Best Picture at Oscars 2025

When Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan took the stage together to give the largest award of the night at the 2025 Academy Awards, it was a touching reunion.

The co-stars of ‘When Harry Met Sally’ thrilled viewers at the Oscars in Los Angeles when they revealed ‘Anora’ as the Best Picture winner.

Their entrance, which was set to the well-known song from their cherished 1989 movie, ‘It Had to Be You’, was utterly sentimental.  The two had a lighthearted conversation before announcing the winner, making fun of Crystal’s lengthy tenure as an Oscar presenter.  He began hosting the awards in 1990 and has since hosted them nine times.

Crystal made a joke about how many times he has hosted, recalling that his first appearance was thirty-five years ago.  Ryan complied, feigning astonishment before joking that he’s still only 47 based on IMDb.

His iconic quote from ‘When Harry Met Sally’ was poignantly twisted by Crystal, who said that winning an Oscar entails wanting “the rest of your life to start as soon as possible.” This made the occasion even more unforgettable.

Ryan looked stunning wearing a deep-red velvet gown without straps, accessorized with a glossy berry pout and matching platform heels.  In keeping with her unique style, she wore her hair in delicate waves.  For the formal announcement, Crystal chose to wear a traditional black suit with a bow tie and accessorize it with reading glasses.

This was the pair’s second reunion of the year.  They most recently appeared together in a Hellmann’s Super Bowl commercial in which they hilariously reenacted the classic Katz’s Deli sequence from the movie.

‘When Harry Met Sally’, which was written by the late Nora Ephron and directed by Rob Reiner, is still a classic.  For their roles, Ryan and Crystal were nominated for Golden Globes, and Ephron’s writing was nominated for an Academy Award.
