Donald Glover Shares Reasons For Ending Childish Gambino Alias

Donald Glover has explained why he is putting a stop to the Childish Gambino moniker. On 19th July, he will release ‘Bando Stone & The New World’, which he states will be his final album as Childish Gambino. The album is currently available for pre-save. This album will also be the official soundtrack for a new movie with the same title. Although Glover has shared a trailer for the film, the release date is still unknown.

In an interview with the New York Times, Glover, known for his work as an actor, comedian, rapper and writer, talked about moving on from the Gambino persona. During the album’s recording process, he realized that it’s done.’ It’s not fulfilling anymore. He just felt like he didn’t need to build in this way anymore.

But that’s not the only reason. Glover revealed that working on the album and the Bando Stone’ film prompted him to reflect on where he should be focusing his energy. After his father’s passing and the birth of his children, he now wants to prioritize his family, alongside his acting career and production company, Gilga.

Glover also told the New York Times that the decline in album consumption and disruptions in the touring industry contributed to his decision to retire the Childish Gambino moniker. He’s no longer interested in pursuing chart success.

To him, success means releasing a large-scale album that he would personally enjoy. With this album, his goal was to perform in big venues and have grand, anthemic songs that create a sense of unity among the audience.

Earlier this week, Glover released a new single, ‘In The Night,’ featuring Jorja Smith and Amaarae. It’s the second track from the ‘Bando Stone’ album, following ‘Lithonia,’ which was released earlier this month.

In May, Glover dropped his latest album, Atavista’. Announced on social media, the album is the complete version of his 2020 record, 3.15.20’. This release includes reworked tracks from the 2020 album and a new song, ‘Little Foot Big Foot,’ and is now available on streaming platforms.

In other news, Childish Gambino recently announced the dates and venues for his ‘New World’ tour, which will cover the UK, Europe, and Australia later this year and into 2025. Additionally, Glover recently criticized the Black Entertainment Television (BET) Awards for having the same number of awards as Sam Smith. Glover expressed his frustration, stating that he feels he should have more BET awards. He emphasized that it’s not personal, but he questioned how much more entertaining he needs to be, pointing out the mathematical aspect of the situation.

He added that it doesn’t make sense to him that he has more Grammys than Will Smith but the same number of BET awards as Sam Smith. He questioned whether it makes sense that he and Sam Smith are tied at the Black Entertainment Television Awards.

Glover won Best Music Video for “This Is America” in 2019, while Smith won the 2015 Award for Best New Artist.
