Katy Perry to Headline 2024 AFL Grand Final
Katy Perry has been announced as the headline performer for the 2024 Australian Football League (AFL) Grand Final.
The singer will entertain a crowd of 100,000 during the pre-game show at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on 28th September. On Instagram, Perry expressed her excitement about returning to Australia and performing at the MCG in front of such enthusiastic fans. She looks forward to the event with anticipation.
Robbie Williams and KISS have previously headlined the AFL Grand Final, with Williams dedicating his 2022 performance to John Farnham, who was recovering from tumour removal surgery.
The rest of the 2024 Grand Final performers will be announced closer to the event. Katy Perry’s headline performance is part of her recent comeback, which has faced some controversy. Perry received criticism when fans noticed Dr. Luke was listed as a co-producer on her recent single ‘Woman’s World’. Dr. Luke has been accused of emotional ab**e and s**ual assault in a long-running lawsuit by Kesha.
Perry has collaborated with Dr. Luke on several major hits, including ‘I Kissed a Girl’, ‘California Gurls’, and ‘Dark Horse’. The association stirred controversy due to Dr. Luke’s legal battle with Kesha. After Kesha sued him, Dr. Luke denied the allegations and countersued, claiming she had breached their recording contract and fabricated r**e allegations. The legal battle was settled last summer, just before it was set to go to trial, with Kesha maintaining her original claims.
In response to the news of Perry working with Dr. Luke again, Kesha seemed to comment with a “lol” on Twitter earlier this month.
Katy Perry has also faced criticism for her music video for ‘Women’s World’, with some fans arguing that it catered to the male gaze rather than challenging it, which was supposedly the intention behind the female empowerment-themed lyrics. Perry defended the video, describing it as satire and noting that it was meant to be fun and slapstick.
