Aaron Sorkin to Write and Direct ‘The Social Network Part II’ for Sony

Aaron Sorkin will write and direct ‘The Social Network Part II’ for Sony, exploring Facebook’s broader societal impact using the ‘Facebook Files’ as a basis. Casting is still unconfirmed, but a new ensemble is reportedly in the works.

In a move few saw coming but many now agree makes perfect sense, ‘The Social Network’ is getting a follow-up. Sony is moving forward with ‘The Social Network Part II’, with Aaron Sorkin not only returning as writer but also stepping into the director’s chair.

Though the original 2010 film — directed by David Fincher and scripted by Sorkin — seemed like a self-contained portrayal of Facebook’s controversial origins, the sequel will reportedly expand the narrative to explore the platform’s far-reaching influence over the last decade.

Rather than picking up directly where the first film left off, the sequel will take a broader thematic approach. Sorkin is said to be focusing on revelations uncovered by The Wall Street Journal’s 2021 ‘Facebook Files’, which detailed internal documents revealing the company’s awareness of how its platform perpetuated harmful content. Topics include politically charged misinformation, harmful effects on young users, and incitement to violence in various parts of the world.

Sorkin has previously hinted at his interest in revisiting Facebook’s story, particularly following the events of 6 January 2020 at the U.S. Capitol. However, sources close to the project say the new film will address a wider range of issues than that single event, reflecting the broader findings from the ‘Facebook Files’ investigation.

Casting Unconfirmed as ‘The Social Network Part II’ Takes Shape

Casting details remain under wraps, and it’s unclear whether Jesse Eisenberg will reprise his role as Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg. However, several deals are reportedly already in place, and a new ensemble is in the works — positioning ‘The Social Network Part II’ as one of Hollywood’s most high-profile upcoming projects.

For now, audiences will have to wait for further announcements. Until then, fans of the original may find themselves revisiting ‘The Social Network’ — perhaps with Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross’ ‘In Motion’ on repeat.
