Stormzy has been awarded an honorary doctorate from the University of Cambridge, recognising his influential scholarship initiative supporting Black British students. The rapper was one of eight individuals honoured by the university this year, receiving a Doctorate in Law in recognition of the “transformative” impact of the Stormzy Scholarship.

The programme, first launched in 2018, initially offered funding for two Black British students annually to attend Cambridge University. It later expanded to support 10 students each year following a partnership with HSBC UK. To date, 56 students have been able to study at Cambridge with their tuition fees and living expenses fully covered.

Professor Deborah Prentice, vice-chancellor of Cambridge, acknowledged the significance of Stormzy’s work, stating that the scholarship programme had created a lasting impact and that the university was proud to honour him with the degree.

This is not the first time Stormzy has received such an accolade. In 2022, the University of Exeter awarded him an honorary doctorate in recognition of his contributions to society and his artistic achievements.

In addition to the scholarship, the rapper has launched several initiatives under the #Merky brand. In 2022, he introduced #Merky FC, which focuses on promoting racial equity within the UK football industry. Since its launch, 63 roles have been created for young people of Black heritage, with 39 positions extended beyond their initial term.

Stormzy Expands Creative Empire With #Merky Films and New Music

Stormzy also founded #Merky Books, a publishing venture with Penguin Random House, aimed at providing a platform for emerging writers from underrepresented backgrounds. Most recently, he announced the launch of #Merky Films, which will debut with a project titled ‘Big Man’. The film, backed by Apple and shot entirely on an iPhone 16 Pro, will see Stormzy take on his first lead acting role. Directed by Oscar-winner Aneil Karia, the film explores the fictional journey of Tenzman, a former rap star facing a turning point in his life.

Elsewhere, Stormzy has also released a new freestyle track titled ‘Sorry Rach!’.
