‘Alien: Romulus’ Earns R Rating For Intense Scenes
Fede Álvarez’s upcoming movie ‘Alien: Romulus’ marks his fourth project to receive an R rating. According to Film Ratings, this latest addition to the franchise, initiated by Ridley Scott almost 50 years ago, has earned its adult rating due to “bloody content and language.” Anyone who has seen the posters or trailers for this sci-fi movie won’t be surprised, as all promotional materials hint at a heavy emphasis on horror.
With four directorial projects to his name, Álvarez has consistently embraced mature themes, never shying away from strong language or violence, fully aware that this would restrict younger viewers from seeing his films in theatres.

Like ‘Alien: Romulus’, his other works—’ The Girl in the Spider’s Web’, ‘Don’t Breathe’, and ‘Evil Dead’—have all been rated R for similar reasons. Compared to his previous films, ‘Alien: Romulus’ might seem relatively mild, as his earlier projects included additional elements of gore and terror. Perhaps he’s mellowing out after all.
Of course, we’re only joking about that last part because ‘Alien: Romulus’ offers everything fans expect from an Álvarez film, including plenty of jump scares, a well-crafted plot, top-notch acting, and a terrifying, seemingly unstoppable antagonist.
Set between Ridley Scott’s 1979 ‘Alien’ and James Cameron’s sequel ‘Aliens’, ‘Alien: Romulus’ presents a new story while honouring its predecessors. Cailee Spaeny stars as Rain Carradine, a young woman seeking a fresh start, who ends up working on a spacecraft. When her crew discovers an abandoned space station, they must confront a deadly predator they never knew existed.
While Sigourney Weaver won’t be reprising her iconic role, the film will feature a host of familiar names and faces, promising to bring a new chapter to the franchise. Alongside Spaeny, the cast includes Isabela Merced (Madame Web), Archie Renaux (Shadow and Bone), David Jonsson (Industry), Spike Fearn (Back to Black), and Aileen Wu.
