In what could become the next breakout action franchise, Amazon MGM Studios is reportedly nearing a U.S. distribution deal for 'Ballerina Overdrive,' an ensemble action thriller directed by Vicky Jewson and written by Kate Freund. The film, which is supposed to star Lana Condor, Maddie Ziegler, and Uma Thurman among others, centers on a group of ballerinas who are forced to fight for their lives after their bus breaks down as they are traveling to a competition.

This deal would give Amazon worldwide control over the movie's release, as it currently owns the foreign rights.
A Ballet Troupe Fights to Survive
Set against the unexpected threat lurking in a remote inn, 'Ballerina Overdrive' weaves a tense narrative that's equal parts dance-driven suspense and survival thriller. Leading the cast as a member of the shipwrecked ballet group is Lana Condor, who is most recognized for her role in 'To All the Boys I've Loved Before.' Iris Apatow, Millicent Simmonds, Avantika, and Maddie Ziegler—who recently starred in 'West Side Story,' and 'The Fallout'—join her, each contributing their own distinct energy and variety to the group. The all-female strong cast is completed by Uma Thurman, an action genre classic from 'Kill Bill' to Pulp Fiction who adds gravitas to the movie.

The story's physical demands are not lost on the cast—for example, Lana Condor allegedly shed 28 pounds throughout a year of intense training, including strength training, conditioning, and ballet classes to give her performance authenticity and endurance.
Buoyed by Big Producers and Global Ambitions
The movie has strong support from Gulfstream Pictures and 87North Productions, the studio behind 'Bullet Train.' Under the direction of seasoned businessmen Kelly McCormick, David Leitch, Bill Bindley, Mike Karz, and Piers Tempest, Amazon MGM is prepared to pay an estimated $11–12 million to license the U.S. rights.
'Ballerina Overdrive' is being considered by the filmmakers as a franchise starter, suggesting not only a gripping stand-alone tale but also the possibility of additional installments. Amazon's domestic acquisition would expedite the film's worldwide release across theaters and streaming services, as it has already been secured abroad.
Backed by prominent producers and lined up for Amazon's reach, it's shaping up to be one of the most buzzed-about releases of the year.
