Citing admiration for Ralph Fiennes's legendary portrayal, Cillian Murphy has flatly dismissed rumours that he will play Lord Voldemort in the upcoming HBO 'Harry Potter' series. Murphy also joked about being "very attached" to his nose and encouraged whoever does take the role.

Clearing the Air: Voldemort Casting Speculation

Cillian Murphy, who starred in 'Oppenheimer,' has categorically dismissed rumours that he may play Lord Voldemort in HBO's upcoming 'Harry Potter' series adaptation. Murphy responded to the rumours when he recently appeared on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, saying, "No... Additionally, it's quite difficult to follow Ralph Fiennes at all. The man is a true legend in acting."
By joking, "My kids show me that occasionally … but no, I don't know anything about that," he added some humour to the situation.

He also made a joke about Voldemort's unusual lack of a nose, stating that he is "extremely attached to it." These remarks came after Ralph Fiennes, who portrayed Voldemort in the first two 'Harry Potter' movies, had previously applauded Murphy as an amazing performer and stated that he believed it would be a "wonderful suggestion" if Murphy played the part.

The new 'Harry Potter' series is set to debut in 2027, and most of the casting has already been confirmed. Dominic McLaughlin will play Harry Potter, Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger, and Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley. Roles for other key characters like Dumbledore, Snape, Hagrid, and McGonagall have also been announced, but the casting for Voldemort has not been officially revealed yet.

What's Next for Murphy?

Even though he won't be using a wand anytime soon, people are already taking notice of Cillian Murphy's next ventures. He co-stars with Emily Watson and Tracey Ullman in 'Steve' (2025), an upcoming Tim Mielants-directed movie based on Max Porter's novella Shy. The film hits select UK theaters on 19th September, and debuts on Netflix on 3rd October.

He's also going back to his roots with Tom Harper's 'The Immortal Man,' which is a continuation of the 'Peaky Blinders' story. With a strong ensemble that includes Rebecca Ferguson, Tim Roth, and Barry Keoghan, the movie is anticipated to be released in late 2025 or early 2026.

Respect for the Past, Eyes on the Future

Murphy's refusal to take on the part of Voldemort appears to stem from both his admiration for Ralph Fiennes's interpretation of the character and his creative disagreements. He emphasizes the legacy of the original movie by stating that someone else will have "big shoes to fill." Instead of pursuing roles solely for their fame or fan speculation, he continues to concentrate on his next movies, expanding on his varied body of work and selecting projects that inspire him.

As the 'Harry Potter' universe prepares to return under a new format, the anticipation for who will play Voldemort continues—but it won't be Murphy.
