Moana and Maui are officially returning to the big screen, with Disney releasing the first glimpse of its highly anticipated live-action 'Moana.' The new teaser, revealed on 17th November, showcases Catherine Laga'aia stepping into the role of the courageous wayfinder and Dwayne Johnson reprising his iconic character, the charismatic demigod Maui.
Johnson, now 53, shared the debut footage on his Instagram, giving fans their first taste of the upcoming reimagining.
'Moana' is a Major Blockbuster
The original 'Moana' (2016) and its 2024 animated sequel became major global successes, with Johnson voicing Maui and Auli'i Cravalho leading as Moana. The live-action remake—directed by Thomas Kail and announced in April 2023—brings together an impressive creative team, including Cravalho and Lin-Manuel Miranda as producers. Miranda, who crafted the beloved music of the animated classic, once again plays a key role behind the scenes.
In late 2024, behind-the-scenes photos from the Hawai'i set circulated online, showing Johnson in full Maui transformation. He later noted to Extra that achieving Maui's appearance required hours of preparation each day, involving extensive costuming and physical transformation.
