A Mythic Epic Returns to Life

With his version of Homer's Odyssey, Christopher Nolan plans to tackle one of literature's most enduring tales, and the early glimpses have only increased the anticipation. Robert Pattinson and Zendaya are shown in full costume in the images, which were made public by Empire and extensively circulated on social media. They are both looking exquisitely realistic and mythic. In the pics released, Pattinson appears as Antinous, one of the arrogant suitors vying for Penelope's hand, while Zendaya embodies the goddess Athena, the divine protector of Odysseus (Matt Demon). 

The film, which Nolan describes as a "mythic action epic," is set for a release on 17th July, 2026, with Universal responsible for the film's distribution.

Reimagining Homer: Characters, Cast & Vision

At its core, 'The Odyssey' follows Odysseus (played by Matt Damon) on his perilous journey home following the Trojan War—facing monsters, temptation, and divine interference along the way. The casting is a dream: Tom Holland is supposed to be Telemachus, Odysseus's young son waiting for his return, while Anne Hathaway steps in as his devoted wife Penelope. 

John Leguizamo as Eumaeus, Lupita Nyong'o, Charlize Theron, Elliot Page, Benny Safdie, Jon Bernthal, Samantha Morton, and Mia Goth are among the other cast members who are supposed to add additional detail to Homer's ancient world.

Nolan's adaptation maintains epic grandeur while leaning toward realism. This is one of his most audacious undertakings to date because to the use of IMAX film cameras and the recently released costumes, which are tangible, lived-in, and rich in historical detail. In order to convey the raw, perilous beauty of Odysseus's quest, Nolan has also stretched the limitations of its production, by spending months at sea and filming roughly around 400 miles of film across open waters.

Empire Magazine's latest stills offer viewers a unique, early glimpse of the film's tone, which is strong, realistic, and emotionally stirring. In one picture, Pattinson's Antinous is dressed in shiny armor, giving him an ominous, aristocratic appearance that suggests political intrigue in Ithaca's court. In contrast, Zendaya's Athena appears in simple yet regal robes, framed by a stark, almost otherworldly landscape—a clear signal that her role will be both spiritual and strategic, guiding Odysseus through his ordeals.

The response from fans has been very enthusiastic. Many have praised Nolan's dedication to authenticity—especially the decision to film on real seas rather than rely on CGI—calling it a "cinematic communion with the original epic." 

With a cast this talented and images this breathtaking, the 17th July, 2026 release date is already set on calendars, and early rumours indicate that this could be one of the year's most unforgettable films.
