There's good news for fans of the 2005 holiday favourite 'The Family Stone': a sequel is officially in the works. The announcement comes with a bittersweet note, as director and writer Thomas Bezucha recently revealed his plans to honour the late legend Diane Keaton, who played the character of unforgettable matriarch Sybil Stone. Over the years, the 2005 original 'The Family Stone'—a cozy, messy, and intensely emotional look at a New England family get-together for Christmas—became a beloved holiday movie. The ensemble cast, which included Diane Keaton as Sybil Stone, Dermot Mulroney, Sarah Jessica Parker, Luke Wilson, Claire Danes, Rachel McAdams, Craig T. Nelson, and others, was directed and written by Thomas Bezucha.

The story centered on Sybil's breast cancer, her family's response to her illness, and the tensions that arise when her eldest son Everett (Mulroney) brings his girlfriend Meredith (Parker) home for the holidays. Made on a small budget, the movie was not just a box office hit but also a seasonal classic, renowned for its touching performances and bittersweet humour.

Diane Keaton's Legacy and the Sequel's Emotional Weight

On 11th October, 2025, Diane Keaton, who portrayed the matriarch Sybil Stone in the first movie, sadly died at the age of 79. Her death has deeply affected Bezucha, who revealed that he had been working on a script for a sequel even before her passing.  He said that losing her felt like "a blow on a tender bruise" and that he has been "haunted by the loss of Sybil" during his writing.

More than ever, now he feels obligated to honour not only her legacy but also the other members of the original cast. In order to ensure that the family she helped define stays loyal to her legacy, Bezucha stressed that he wishes to "honour her even more" with this sequel.

What to Expect from the Sequel?

Although 'The Family Stone 2' has not yet received any official approval, Bezucha claims that he has contacted the original cast and have received positive feedback for the same. He made it clear that he only wants to move forward if the principal cast returns: "I'm not interested in the Brady family reunion without the original Jan."

Fans can expect a story that represents both the seriousness and the warmth of the first movie, examining how the Stone family recovers, transforms, and possibly encounters new difficulties without Sybil, even though particular plot details are still being kept under wraps.

The sequel is probably going to be both a fresh chapter in the Stone family's history and a tribute to Keaton's life and performance, given Bezucha's emotional state and dedication. Although a release date is yet to be disclosed, the announcement alone has made longstanding supporters feel hopeful and nostalgic.
