Fox has Officially Canceled 'The Great North' After Five Seasons

By 2026, Fox's Sunday night animation block would be changed. The network announced on 3rd October, that it has officially terminated its animated family comedy, 'The Great North,' after five successful seasons. The show's warm tone, strange comedy, and emotional core made it a cult favorite. It chronicled the eccentric Tobin family in Alaska. Despite receiving positive reviews and a devoted following during its run, the series was eventually passed over for renewal while its animated counterparts landed multi-year contracts.

'The Great North,' which was created by Wendy Molyneux and Lizzie Molyneux-Logelin of Bob's Burgers and Minty Lewis, debuted in early 2021 under Fox's Animation Domination label. Loren Bouchard served as executive producer. In the small Alaskan village of Lone Moose, it followed Beef Tobin (voiced by Nick Offerman), a single father raising four kids: Moon (Aparna Nancherla), Judy (Jenny Slate), Ham (Paul Rust), and Wolf (Will Forte). Recurring themes included Beef's attempts to maintain the family unit, Wolf and his fiancée Honeybee (Dulcé Sloan), and Judy's aspirations for her painting.

In addition, Megan Mullally played Judy's employer Alyson, and Alanis Morissette made a cameo as Judy's fictional buddy in the Northern Lights. The show combined realistic and endearing humor with slice-of-life situations. Over its run, the show was renewed steadily: even before the first season aired, Fox greenlit season two. Season three was renewed in 2021, followed by season four in 2022 and season five in early 2024. Some scheduling oddities (like Madden/NASCAR rain delays) and inconsistent airing throughout the year plagued its fifth season.

In September 2025, the show's last episodes came to an end with a deeply symbolic conclusion: Beef is assigned to retrieve a moose carcass for a town feast and, with the town's assistance, succeeds after facing difficulties. He then looks up at the northern sky and declares his love for the "Great North" once more.

All About the Cancellation—What Can Be the Reason?

Aimee Steinberger, the director of 'The Great North,' confirmed the cancellation on BlueSky, posting: "Sadly we got the news today that 'The Great North' is officially cancelled. I’m pretty sad about it…I really loved the whole talented crew I worked with." She left a glimmer of hope: "It's always possible! Futurama came back like three times."

Fox renewed all of the other major animated series (The Simpsons, Bob's Burgers, Family Guy, American Dad!) for several years in 2025, along with more recent cartoons like 'Krapopolis,' 'Grimsburg,' and 'Universal Basic Guys,' according to insiders, indicating a packed renewal slate. 'The Great North' was the sole animation left in limbo as a result. Some people suspect that it was pushed out due to scheduling, financial, or licensing issues.

Fans responded right away: several on social media expressed their sadness, with comments like, "This tears my soul," "I adore this show so much," and demanded crossovers or attempts at a rebirth. Some people said that the show was soothing to watch because of its kind, encouraging family themes. Others called on Hulu or Fox to save it. In the meantime, the show's Instagram account, (NorthToWharf) reminded viewers of the entire 97-episode library and offered a sincere “thank you” to the actors and crew for its amazing journey.

Even though Fox has canceled the series, there is yet hope. Given Steinberger's statement and the show's cult following, a streaming platform rebirth is not out of the question. Fans are still talking about unresolved stories, searching for hints of a return, and rewatching previous episodes. Even if 'The Great North' was cancelled on Fox, its history and the loyalty of its viewers may help to preserve the Tobins' northern sky.
