Gwyneth Paltrow says stepping away from acting was something she needed to do to truly find herself.
As the Goop founder prepares for her return to the big screen in 'Marty Supreme' after nearly seven years away from acting, and more than 15 years since her last major role, she opened up about why she took such a long break.
Gwyneth Paltrow's Long Break
In a recent Variety and CNN 'Actors on Actors' conversation with Jacob Elordi, Paltrow explained that acting in her 20s often left her feeling isolated. She was constantly travelling, didn’t fully know who she was yet, and realised she needed time to grow up and understand herself better. That personal growth, she said, came largely through focusing on her family and later building her business.

The timing of 'Marty Supreme' felt especially meaningful. As her children were heading off to college, Gwyneth Paltrow found herself facing a new stage of life and questioning her identity and sense of purpose. Meeting director Josh Safdie convinced her that this project was worth returning for, and she felt the film had the same spirit as the movies she loved making in the 1990s.
Paltrow, who shares children Apple and Moses with ex-husband Chris Martin and is also a stepmom to her husband Brad Falchuk's two children, has admitted that acting wasn't something she had been actively missing. Earlier this month, she shared that her decision to return came after all four kids had left home, leaving her in an unfamiliar and emotional place.

While she stayed busy running her wellness brand, Goop, she said the empty-nest phase brought unexpected anxiety and deep questions about her direction in life. She began wondering where she belonged, who she really was, and what she wanted next.
Once filming began, however, something shifted. Gwyneth Paltrow recalled feeling a sudden spark on set and realising that the excitement she was experiencing was her love for acting returning.
Gwyneth Paltrow's return to acting feels less like a comeback and more like a new beginning. After years of personal growth, family focus, and self-discovery, she's stepping back onto the screen with renewed purpose and genuine excitement for what's ahead.
