One of Hollywood's most cherished legends, Robert Redford, died at the age of 89 on 16th September. According to his publicist, he passed away quietly in the company of his loved ones at his Sundance, Utah, home. Redford was a charismatic character on and off screen, and his passing signifies the end of a period in American cinema history when he was praised for his bold directing, unwavering support of independent film, and environmental issues in addition to his iconic leading man appeal. While the world commemorates a life well lived, the family has requested solitude.
A Stellar Career in Front of the Camera
In the late 1960s and early 1970s, Redford's acting career took off thanks to his instantly identifiable appearance, which included windswept hair, effortless charm, and the capacity to portray both challenging and endearing roles. One of his most cherished roles was with Paul Newman in 'Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid' (1969), which cemented his reputation as a box office attraction.

His roles in 'The Sting,' 'All the President's Men,' and 'The Way We Were' further cemented his reputation as one of Hollywood's most iconic performers.
His subsequent roles in 'All Is Lost,' and 'The Old Man & the Gun' further exhibited his capacity to project mature reflection and calm strength.
Behind the Camera & the Birth of Sundance
Redford was not just a notable actor but also a significant filmmaker. The pinnacle of his diverse career was his 1980 breakthrough feature, 'Ordinary People,' which earned him the Academy Awards for Best Picture and Best Director. He directed additional well-received movies including 'Quiz Show,' and 'The Horse Whisperer,' constantly pushing himself and viewers with difficult subjects.

Personal Life, Activism & Enduring Legacy
Born in 1936 in West Los Angeles, Robert Redford rose to stardom at a young age but lived a very secluded existence for the most part. In 2009, he married German artist Sibylle Szaggars after having four children with Lola Van Wagenen, with whom he sadly lost two sons. Redford was a devoted environmentalist who spent his life promoting conservation, public lands, and climate issues in addition to his work as a filmmaker.
