John Candy, the beloved comedic actor, filmed his entire role as Gus Polinski in 'Home Alone' in less than 24 hours. The behind-the-scenes story is featured in the new documentary 'John Candy: I Like Me,' which premieres on Amazon Prime on 10th October 2025.
Director Chris Columbus recalled wanting John Candy for the role of the "Polka King of the Midwest" but knew his availability was limited. Candy reportedly arrived on set with a full backstory for his character, a detail that emerged organically during the 23 hours of shooting.
Despite the tight schedule, Candy brought energy and improvisation to every scene, especially in sequences with co-star Catherine OHara, including the memorable van performance as the lead musician of the Kenosha Kickers.

John Candy's Portrayal of Gus Polinski
John Candy's portrayal of Gus Polinski was inspired by his earlier character Yosh Shmenge from the Canadian sketch comedy show 'SCTV.' Columbus described the character as simple, yet Candy infused it with depth and charm in a single day of filming. O'Hara highlighted Candy's creativity, noting that much of the humour and nuance in their scenes came from his spontaneous ideas rather than scripted adjustments.
Although Candy didn't share scenes with Macaulay Culkin in 'Home Alone,' the two had previously worked together on 'Uncle Buck' (1989). Culkin described John Candy as a caring, paternal presence on set, someone who noticed personal struggles and offered support during challenging times. His kindness stood out amid the pressures of fame and film production.
