More than three years after the verdict in his defamation case against Amber Heard, Johnny Depp is speaking candidly about their tumultuous relationship, the intense legal battle that followed, and the personal toll it all took.
In a rare and revealing interview with The Sunday Times, the 62-year-old actor opened up about how his past shaped his perception of love and how those early experiences influenced his connection with Heard. Johnny Depp and Amber Heard’s story began in 2011, blossomed into marriage by 2015, and unravelled just over a year later, setting off a storm of courtroom battles and relentless media scrutiny that would follow them for years.

What Love Meant for Johnny Depp
Looking back, Johnny Depp acknowledged that his idea of love had once been clouded. He admitted to being drawn to people who carry visible emotional weight, believing he could help them heal. But that desire, he noted, can sometimes backfire, as those struggles can evolve into deeper, more destructive patterns. He now views that chapter of his life as just one fragment of his overall story.
Depp and Heard’s relationship reached a breaking point in 2016 when she filed for divorce and obtained a temporary restraining order, citing allegations of abuse. Although they settled for $7 million later that year, the legal drama reignited in 2019 when Depp filed a defamation lawsuit over an op-ed Heard published in The Washington Post. In the article, she discussed the backlash she faced after speaking out about domestic abuse, though she did not name Depp directly.

Johnny Depp And The Court History
In 2020, the actor faced a major legal setback in the U.K. after losing a libel lawsuit against a British tabloid that had branded him a "wife-beater." The court ruled in favour of the publication, describing its claims as "substantially true." Despite losing the case, Depp maintained his innocence and pressed on with the U.S. defamation trial in Virginia.
That high-profile trial, broadcast live in 2022, lasted six weeks and saw both Depp and Heard make shocking accusations. In June of that year, a jury ruled in Depp’s favour on all three of his claims, awarding him $10.35 million in damages. Amber Heard, who secured a partial win in her countersuit and was awarded $2 million, later settled with Depp by December. As part of the agreement, she agreed to pay him $1 million—a sum he publicly committed to donating to various charities.

Public Legal Battle Took Toll on Johnny Depp
Depp explained that taking the legal battle public wasn’t a decision made lightly. He knew it would require him to expose personal details and endure intense scrutiny. But for him, the alternative — staying silent — felt like an acceptance of false accusations. He said that remaining quiet would have affected not just his legacy, but also how his children and future generations would view him.
He shared that he had no fear the night before the trial began. For Depp, speaking the truth didn’t require preparation — he was ready to tell his side, no matter the outcome. He was even prepared to return to a humble life if it came to that, recalling a time when he had pumped gas for a living.
Reflecting on the aftermath, Depp spoke about the betrayal he experienced from within his own circle. Despite decades of loyalty, some people he trusted turned against him, including a longtime agent who testified unfavorably in court. He described the feeling as “death by confetti,” referring to those who publicly celebrated him while privately undermining him for their gain.

He narrowed the deepest betrayals down to three individuals, people who had once shared intimate moments with his family. While he acknowledged that some people were too afraid to stand by him, he emphasised that he felt like a test case for the #MeToo movement, facing accusations before the full cultural reckoning had begun.
Now, as he continues his career and personal life largely away from the spotlight — splitting time between the U.K. and the Bahamas — Johnny Depp is reclaiming his narrative. The road has been long and controversial, but for him, speaking the truth and standing firm in the face of adversity remains more important than ever.
