Millie Bobby Brown's Controversial 'Stranger Things' Season 5 Look Draws Inspiration from an '80s Icon

Millie Bobby Brown, 21, initially had reservations about Eleven's wardrobe in the fifth and final season of 'Stranger Things,' according to the show's longtime costume designer, Amy Parris. Parris, who has been curating the series' signature '80s-inspired looks for several seasons, revealed that she anticipated the strong reactions to Eleven's outfit for the new season.

In Season 5, Eleven sports a bold ensemble featuring tiny red shorts layered over light grey sweatpants, paired with a cropped grey sweatshirt and a bandana around her neck. This layered style drew inspiration from iconic '80s characters, including Josh Brolin's workout-wear look in 'The Goonies' and Soleil Moon Frye’s mismatched, eclectic style in 'Punky Brewster.'

Designer Amy Parris explained that the outfit reflects Eleven's character development in the show, noting that she is not focused on fashion, especially since her friend Max, the only other girl in the group, is in a coma.

While Brown was initially hesitant about the layered shorts-over-sweatpants look, she eventually embraced it after seeing how it fit and how comfortable it was. The actress reportedly had playful reservations when first trying on the costume, but came to appreciate its style and practicality. Parris noted that even though it was a fashion risk for the era, Millie Bobby Brown ultimately enjoyed wearing the ensemble.

The costume reflects the mix of authenticity and creativity that defines 'Stranger Things’ '80s aesthetic, blending historical accuracy with fun, character-driven choices. The final season premiered its first four episodes on Netflix, with the next three episodes set to release on 25th December and the series finale scheduled for 31st December 2025.
