According to Cregger, rather than explicitly rehashing or depending on characters from earlier films, such as Leon S. Kennedy, the film will return to the horror foundations of the original 'Resident Evil' games, introducing new characters and storylines.

It is anticipated that the tone would be gritty and truer to the spirit of the video games.

Release Date & Legacy of 'Resident Evil'

The revival will be released in theaters on 18th September, 2026, according to Sony Pictures. Locations and other production details are still being kept under wraps, but filming is anticipated to start in 2025. This will be the latest adaption of 'Resident Evil.'

In 2002, Milla Jovovich starred in the first film of the franchise, which led to other spin-offs and sequels. The movie series has surpassed USD 1.2 billion at the global box office. Additionally, there was a Netflix series and a more contemporary revival, 'Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City' (2021).
