The horror genre continues its winning streak in 2025, and one of the most anticipated releases remains '28 Years Later,' the revival of Danny Boyle and Alex Garland's groundbreaking infection franchise. The follow-up film, titled '28 Years Later: The Bone Temple,' was shot directly after the first instalment during late 2024 and is locked in for a theatrical debut on 16th January 2026.

Sony Pictures Entertainment has now unveiled a new trailer, offering the most detailed glimpse so far at the film's violent, adrenaline-charged world. Ralph Fiennes returns as Dr Kelson, a scientist desperately attempting to contain the infected as the threat evolves into something even more dangerous. He is joined by Chi Lewis-Parry, who appears as Samson, the series's powerful new "Alpha" variant. The footage also expands on the controversial ending of the previous film, highlighting the escalating clash between Dr Kelson and the brutal cult led by Jimmy Crystal, played by Jack O'Connell.

For this second chapter, Nia DaCosta—known for 'Candyman'—takes over directing duties from Boyle. Cillian Murphy, the original franchise's breakout star, is back behind the scenes as an executive producer, while Garland once again returns as the writer. The cast features Fiennes, Lewis-Parry, and O'Connell, alongside Alfie Williams, Erin Kellyman, and additional emerging talent.

What Does '28 Years Later: The Bone Temple' Follow?

While last year's '28 Years Later' didn't match the legendary impact of '28 Days Later,' it still delivered the franchise's signature combination of social commentary, bleak atmosphere, and intense horror. Critics embraced the sequel with an 89% score, though audience reactions were more mixed. DaCosta aims to build on that foundation with a story that pushes the universe in a bold new direction.

The film's storyline continues expanding Boyle and Garland's infected-ravaged world, but shifts its focus to human brutality as an even greater threat. Dr Kelson faces a shocking new alliance that carries consequences for the entire world, while young survivor Spike finds himself trapped in a terrifying confrontation with cult leader Jimmy Crystal. As the narrative unfolds, it becomes clear that the infected are no longer the most frightening force—the darkest dangers now emerge from the survivors themselves.

'28 Years Later: The Bone Temple' arrives in theatres on 16th January 2026.
