Acclaimed director Rian Johnson has opened up about the fate of his cancelled 'Star Wars' trilogy, shedding light on why the project never moved forward. Originally announced ahead of the release of 'Star Wars: The Last Jedi' in 2017, Johnson’s standalone trilogy was expected to chart a new path within the 'Star Wars' universe. However, that vision never materialised.

In a recent interview, Rian Johnson explained that the project never gained real momentum. While he did engage in creative conversations with Kathleen Kennedy, the president of Lucasfilm, the collaboration remained informal and exploratory. Johnson shared that the development never went beyond loose conceptual discussions. There were no official scripts, outlines, or treatments for the proposed trilogy.

Rian Johnson's New Career Direction

The real turning point came with the massive success of 'Knives Out' in 2019. Johnson noted that once the mystery film became a hit, his career took a new direction. With growing demand for his unique storytelling style, he quickly shifted focus toward building what is now a successful mystery franchise. This pivot led to him being immersed in sequels like 'Glass Onion' and his next upcoming release, 'Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery', set to open this year’s London Film Festival.

Although his 'Star Wars' trilogy was shelved, Rian Johnson expressed openness to retu

rning to the galaxy far, far away in the future. He emphasised that while he’s currently focused on his original projects, he would be thrilled to revisit the 'Star Wars' universe if the opportunity arises.

As of now, no 'Star Wars' films have been released since 2019’s 'The Rise of Skywalker'. However, the franchise has expanded significantly through television with series like 'Andor', 'Ahsoka', and the upcoming 'Skeleton Crew'. New films are on the horizon as well, including 'The Mandalorian' and 'Grogu', scheduled for 2026 and the newly announced 'Starfighter' starring Ryan Gosling, slated for 2027.

With Rian Johnson continuing to carve out his niche in the mystery genre and 'Star Wars' preparing for a cinematic comeback, fans of both have plenty to look forward to.
