Fans of the cult film will be pleased to learn that 'Spaceballs 2' has officially begun production and that retired actor Rick Moranis will be reprising his cherished role as Lord Dark Helmet. In addition to bringing back the cherished parody franchise, the announcement also marks Moranis's first live-action film role in a long time. The sequel is expected to bring the same humorous attitude into a contemporary era of sci-fi spoofs, with new actors joining the mix and returning original cast members.
Rick Moranis Comes Out of Retirement
Famous for his parts in 'Spaceballs,' 'Ghostbusters,' and 'Honey, I Shrunk the Kids,' Rick Moranis mostly stopped doing full-time acting in the late 1990s to raise his kids after his wife died. In 1997, he made his final live-action film performance in 'Honey, We Shrunk Ourselves.'

Although he has periodically provided his voice in minor motion pictures over the years, 'Spaceballs 2' is being marketed as his first significant on-screen appearance. A table read photo of Moranis with his original cast members and newcomers appeared after Amazon MGM Studios formally confirmed that production had begun.
What to Expect in 'Spaceballs 2'?
The 1987 original 'Spaceballs' was a lighthearted satire of popular science fiction films such as 'Alien,' 'Star Wars,' and 'Star Trek.' Mercenary Lone Starr (Bill Pullman) and his sidekick/dog Barf (John Candy) were followed as they attempted to save Princess Vespa from the malevolent Spaceballs who sought to take away all of Druidia's air. They encountered Colonel Sandurz, the incompetent Dark Helmet (Moranis), Yogurt (Mel Brooks), and "the Schwartz" along the way.
The studio defines 'Spaceballs 2' as a "Non‑Prequel Non‑Reboot Sequel Part Two but with Reboot Elements"—meaning it will pay homage to the original while extending or remixing the model, while narrative details are still being kept under wraps.
Check Out the Official Annoucement:
Among the returning cast members are Mel Brooks (as Yogurt), George Wyner (Colonel Sandurz), Daphne Zuniga (Princess Vespa), and Bill Pullman (Lone Starr). Anthony Carrigan, Lewis Pullman (Bill Pullman's son), Keke Palmer, and Josh Gad (who is also co-writing and producing) have been added to the group.
Josh Greenbaum is directing the movie, and Gad, Benji Samit, and Dan Hernandez co-wrote the script. Official production started (apparently in Sydney), with a 2027 release date set.
