Scarlett Johansson is set to lead the upcoming 'Exorcist' film from Universal, in collaboration with horror powerhouse Blumhouse and Atomic Monster. The project marks a new direction for the long-running franchise and will be written, directed, and produced by acclaimed filmmaker Mike Flanagan.
The new instalment is being described as a bold and radical reinterpretation of the classic horror property. However, while it will exist in the same universe as the original 1973 'Exorcist' film by William Friedkin, it will not serve as a direct sequel to 2023's 'The Exorcist: Believer.' Plot details remain tightly under wraps, and no additional cast members have been announced so far. Filming is expected to take place in New York City.

Mike Flanagan is Excited For Scarlett Johansson Joining The Project
Flanagan, known for his work on 'Doctor Sleep' and 'The Life of Chuck', expressed strong enthusiasm about Johansson joining the project. He has praised her ability to deliver emotionally grounded performances across both large-scale blockbusters and more intimate, character-driven films, calling her presence in the movie an exciting creative addition.
Universal previously acquired the rights to produce a new 'Exorcist' trilogy in a deal worth $400 million in 2021. However, the first attempt to relaunch the franchise struggled to generate long-term momentum. While 'The Exorcist: Believer' grossed $136 million worldwide, the performance fell short of expectations for a major franchise revival, delaying future instalments.

Scarlett Johansson recently helped Universal revive another major IP with 'Jurassic World Rebirth', which reportedly earned $868 million globally. She is also an Oscar-nominated actress for her roles in 'Marriage Story' and 'Jojo Rabbit.' In addition, she made her directorial debut earlier this year with 'Eleanor the Great', a dramedy led by June Squibb that showcased a different side of her creative range.
With Johansson's star power and Flanagan's horror expertise, the new 'Exorcist' movie is already shaping up to be one of the most anticipated supernatural horror releases in development.
