With an estimated $150 million in North America during its opening weekend and $226 million worldwide, 'Wicked: For Good,' the eagerly awaited conclusion to Universal's two-part production of the classic Broadway musical, has smashed into theaters with record-breaking success. In addition to outperforming the original 'Wicked' film, this new installment has broken all prior box office records for musical adaptations and has set a new standard for Broadway-to-film adaptations.

The film, which explores themes of friendship, power, and redemption in the magical Land of Oz, has won accolades from both reviewers and fans for its breathtaking visuals, amazing musical performances, and captivating character arcs.

'Wicked: For Good' was able to surge to the top of the box office charts in just its first weekend, earning around $150 million from 4,115 North American theaters. This haul easily surpasses the debut of the first 'Wicked' film, which opened with around $112.5 million. Internationally, it added another $76 million across 78 markets, bringing the global opening tally to $226 million—a record-breaking figure for a stage musical adaptation.

With $15.5 million in domestic revenue from IMAX screenings, the film has proved to be one of Universal's best November showings. This outstanding performance makes 'Wicked: For Good' one of the best debuts of the year and solidifies it as the largest Broadway adaption to date. According to Forbes, the film's opening is second only to 'A Minecraft Movie' in 2025.

Glinda and Elphaba's Grand Finale

Ariana Grande as Glinda and Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba are the two central characters in 'Wicked: For Good.' As the plot explores darker themes of power, identity, and redemption in the Land of Oz, they reprise their roles from the first movie and bear the emotional burden of this finale. The film, which is directed by Jon M. Chu, offers a more personal, character-driven resolution while maintaining the expansive grandeur of its predecessor.

Supporting them is a starry ensemble, including Jeff Goldblum, Michelle Yeoh, and Jonathan Bailey, who have added depth and gravitas to the cast. The film brings resolution to longtime lingering questions about Glinda's leadership and Elphaba's "wicked" legacy. The movie was able to receive an A CinemaScore and a 95% positive rating on Rotten Tomatoes from viewers, indicating that early audience comments are largely good.

Grande and Erivo's performances have already received high praise from social media users and critics, who have described it as a "soaring, emotional finale" and has already created a lot of buzz for the awards season.

Bigger Implications for Musicals & the Future

More than merely a commercial success, Wicked: For Good's successful premiere marks a significant milestone for musical films and Broadway adaptations. By smashing past records, the movie demonstrates that, when supported by star talent, excellent production qualities, and astute release scheduling, there is still a large audience appetite for stage-to-screen musicals. The female-skewing audience (about 71% of ticket buyers, per PostTrak) also highlights how musicals continue to resonate strongly with family audiences, especially during holiday windows.

Looking ahead, the movie is in a strong position to maintain its momentum throughout the holiday season. With strong word-of-mouth, favourable audience response, and the established 'Wicked' brand, industry watchers believe it could sustain a long and profitable theatrical run. Universal’s "two-part Wicked gamble" appears to be paying off, and if 'Wicked: For Good' keeps rising at the box office, it may pave the way for future musical adaptations that are even more ambitious.
